Oscar growth rate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes mine grew at the same rate. 1 inch a month always seemed a little slow to me. Make it 1,5-2 inch a month till they hit 9 inch. That is of course when you feed a lot and change a lot of water.

It's a little sad that people say your trolling just because your Oscar grows fast thanks to your good water quality and the amount you feed.

Thanks for replying, and not calling me a liar. So his growth will slow down when he hits 9 inches or so? I hope so. He's growing a little too fast for me.

Yes it probably will. I picked up a 4 inch Oscar last October, in December he was about 8 inch, and right now about 11.
The last 2 months he grew maybe 0,5 inch a month.

2.5" in 2 months is not so abnormal. Let's for aguments sake say it was slightly longer than 2.5" and it's now slighthy shorter than 5" or even 5" at the rate of 1+" a month is normal for a small fish given good food and very clean water. The original clame of 7" is byone what I've ever seen. Oscars are fast growers but as stated it will begin to slow as it gets bigger.

Cant be. I've had mine close to two months now and they've grown about an inch from 2.5-3.5.

I bought this one a couple of months (around early to mid Feb) ago at about 2.5" and its a good 4.5" now so it's grown about 1" a month since I got it. The larger it gets the slower it will grow but early Oscars are very fast growers. I'll see if I can post a current picture tonight for a comparsion. Its pattern has also changed considerably since these pictures were taken.

This growth rate sounds just about right. If fed well with good water quality, it should grow this fast. And like others said, the bigger it gets the slower it grows. So don't expect this to last. As for the thickness be careful not to have I become overweight with obesity. Oscars will eat even if its satisfied. Try feeding it leaner proteins if you aren't already. Pellets are more than likely a staple. But if its growing at a alarming rate start feeding it less high proteins like beef heart etc. And start giving it veges like carrots and such. It's good for them anyways. They need fiber ;)

I'd be surprised if you could get more than about 1.5" per month. That would be pretty exceptional circumstances and probably a spurt, and not sustained at that speed either. They do grow very fast though.

^this, i do agree oscars grow very fast, but i've kept oscars in the past and none sustained a growth rate like that, i had a red oscar that did sustain a 1.5 growth rate per month, but slowed down at 8-9 inches to the OP im not doubting you, but i wouldnt get my hopes up for this to be the normal growth rate, good water quality and good food help alot, but still

Fastest I've seen was 4 inches in about 2 and a half months. That was on live food in an under stocked tank, with 3x weekly wc. So that was just over 1.5" per month, but I guess different fish could have faster growth rates than mine. Either way, it slowed down drastically at 8", and then slowed even more at 10"
