fish grew up in overflow.

If it is doing fine then you should just leave it there until you have another reason to tear down the drain and return pipes. I had a 2" front disappear for almost a year. I found him in a small compartment in the filter at 4". He wasn't super healthy when I found him but now you couldn't tell the difference from the others in his colony.

I suggest try using a plain net or plastic bag attached to a string to fish him out.

Yeah, I get 1/2" fry in the filters pretty much every other week it seems. I was just surprised to see an adolescent fish in there. He must've grown up in there because I don't reintroduce fry to the tank until they are bigger than this one is, about 2.5-3". I would rather get him out now even if it kills him than have him get wedged or die on his own and have that polluting the water not being able to get him out at all.

I have several active breeders in this tank (think 5 ruby red female, 2 yellow lab female, and 1 fryeri female all regularly breeding) and this is an issue i'm sure will happen again. I was kind of hoping for a simpler idea to fix this because I know this will happen again and again.

Thanks for the input

I just had the exaxt same thing happen to me yesterday. Had to fish out a 2" Trimac that had found his way into the overflow of my 125 a month or two back. Had to take out the standpipe in order to get to him.
