Baby Parrots (Hoplarchus psittacus, that is)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome work. They are one tough fish to breed successfully and a real joy to keep. It is pretty cool how young they get there adult coloration. Good to see some tank raised psittacus will be around. What is your ph and hardness?

Anyone up your way cracked the lamena breeding code yet? I can't remember if you were working with them along with your other madagascars or if that was someone else.

I'm glad to see you're having such success with these fish. They are on my list of species to keep, if I could ever get some tank space! keep us updated with their progress.

Thanks. I do count myself fortunate to have bred them. Actually, I really have no idea what the tank's pH and hardness parameters are.

A aquarist friend of mine is the closest locally to having had some success with the lamena. Despite having bred them a few times, the eggs never survived due to the species having attention deficit disorder (ie getting distracted while guarding their eggs) Also they always laid them on the glass or a huge piece of driftwood so removing them wasn't an option. Then they killed one another until a single male was left. The end. Well not quite. He is going to be obtaining some more adults and giving it another go. I have 6 'nourissati' just coming up to 4", and starting to show some interest in one another. And they haven't started killing one another --- yet!! So I'm hopeful.

Thank you. I will keep things updated.

Good to hear.
The fry are doing fine. Things are getting a little crowded however. I've got about 150 of them spread out over 4-25 G tanks. They're hitting about 2" now and eating like little pigs. They are looking very much like the parents even at that small size.
