Tank cost per month

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have about 20 tanks set up, 5 are unheated, 5 are unlit.
In winter, the fish portion my energy bill hovers around $225per month, in summer it drops to around $100+(lights and pumps, most heaters unplugged) .
Add another $30 per month for water.
Add a 2000 gal pond in summer, so one extra pump.
I have all the fish in an out building, and on separate meters.

If the heaters are on 15h/day you're looking at 540Kwh a month (76$ at .14cents a kwh) for those alone. I'd hope they weren't on that much. I live in AZ and I don't have to run heaters so it's just the pumps and lights which don't take up very much. A 125G and a 10g take up 54 kwh a month together. If you had your own house I'd recommend adjusting the thermostat instead as it would be cheaper. Barring that try seeing if you can downsize the heaters, say instead of 4x300w try to see if 1x300w in the 125 and then 3x100w in the others. That would half your wattage right there. You might even be able to get away with a 50w in the 10g.

edit: of course there's always the option of chipping in 100$ a month to cover the electricity cost of your tanks. Not sure if you work or not, but that to me would solve it instantly.

I dont work and am still in school. I dont think my dad would take money, he just wants to get rid of the tanks and I think he just makes the bill a reason to do it. The temperature is heating up around here so I think the heaters might be on only 6 hours/day. Thanks again for all of the replies.

you can try unplugging the heaters and re plugging them in yourself, i.e plug it on why your at school then pull it out when u get home until X time etc. Its a bit risky but should be fine if your monitor it a few times first or throw them on one of those cheap ass timers you spin around and set it to run for set periods, see if the bill comes down if it doesn't then you know its not the tanks.

As for your dad wanting the tank gone, just explain how it keeps you out of trouble from drug deals with mexicans at school, he should love the fish tank after that =) Every man needs a hobby

I agree. Every person should have a hobby. I told him once that isn't it better that I spend money on fish than on drugs (not the mexican part because every race has their badies) and he didn't say anything.

Post the following information and I can do the math to give you a pretty precise estimate of what your tanks are costing to run.

1. Model of each filter running and how many
2. The wattage of the bulbs you are running on each tank and the number of hours you have them on.
3. How much you pay per KWHr

There is no way your heaters are running 15 hours per day. My ~800G tank has 1800W worth of heaters and they only run for 6 hours per day in the dead of winter to maintain 80F when air temps in the room get down into the 50s. I doubt it gets that cold in the room your tanks are in.

If you want to figure it out for yourself, you can just use this handy calculator: http://www.hamzasreef.com/Contents/Calculators/ElectricalConsumption.php

Enter the eletrical consumption of each device and it will give you the cost per month.

how much wattage does a marineland penguin 400, ac 110, fluval 406 and rena xp3 use? I heater should actually be on only 3 hours at most. The house's cost per kilowatt is $0.21. Thanks for all of the replies everyone
