So I recently bought an ornate bichir about a week ago. He is 7 inches long and he is 14 months old. The guy who had it before me kept him in a 135 and then recently moved him into a 29 gallon. He is very active and everything look proportional on him. He was also captive bred. The guy who kept him before me had him since he was 2 inches and he takes really good care of his fish. Possibly just small genes? Do you think he will eventually reach max size? Even 12 inches would be awesome for me. He is the only fish in my 55 gallon tank and I change 50% water one time a week

If the Guy kept good care of the 29g and routine water changes I don't see why he would be stunted yet. He is only 7" there was lots of room to grow if he was in proper care. I think he will still grow but not Max size in a 55g. You may be stunting him when/if he gets bigger

He should be able to at least grow out a little in my 55 gallon, i will rehome him if he gets too big but im sure i have at least 6 months and yah the guy took real good care of him, he spent majority of his time in the 135 gallon, only recently moved to the 29 that's why I don't understand how he is only 7 inches at 14 months old

it might start growing again in a large enough tank.
