Armatus and ATF as tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lol a footlong GATF wouldn't deny a 4 inch armatus for food either..
Lix, the closest you can get to an ATF is Hepsetus Odoe. They aren't cheap but nowhere near the price of ATF.

I have to say I agree with chicx again as far as best case scenario would be a 12 inch ATF and a 6 inch Armatus, however I think you could get away with both of them being 12 inches, since the Armatus will grow much more slowly from that point on ..... yes the Armatus will still grow quicker and always be bigger, I just don't think he will ever be able to get so much bigger that he will try eating the ATF

I can agree on this. If both fish were around a foot, with maybe the gatf being slightly larger it could work. Yea in the end the army will grow quicker than the atf, but at least he should be able to hold his own.

i'm wondering why my armatus wouldn't each my bichirs or my red wolf fish. My wolf is only 4.5 inches and it looks like a comet goldfish. He constantly swims around and is an easy target. He sometimes swims right at the armtus' face but my armatus just ignores the wolf. Also, my bichirs seems to be easy pickings for the armatus. They are only 5.5 inches long and very slender. My armatus could eat it in one gulp. My bichirs also swims at my armatus' face but my armatus is not interested.

I know what you mean, nothing is ever a guarantee, although wolves and bichirs are also wide, not like a skinny ATF .... I also think bichirs must taste as bad as pleco's cause I very rarely hear of other fish eating them, but I have no personal experience with bichirs ... we can make educated guesses based on known behavior but every situation and every fish is different ..... its what can make the hobby so frustrating and also so interesting at the same time

Why not try with a divider first to see reaction of the Armatus? Then you can either wait for them to get used to eachother or trade back haha. Just tell the person you have to experiment compatibility with your current fish in the tank.

Personally, I'd want my GATF to be a foot long before I added a 4-5 inch armatus. Anything less than that and I wouldn't do it with my fish.
This could be bad as well! One thing I learn about predator fish is they're predators, doesn't matter whether it is an armatus, ATF, bichir, catfish, arowana, etc.... Adding a small fish into a tank with a big, established fish equals feeding time!

May be they're stink! Seriously, you like to ask for input, but you don't like to take "no" for answer. Honestly, no one can tell for sure whether it works or doesn't. We don't speak fish so we can't ask them if it's ok for them to live together.

haha the blunt advice of JL! I won't bother you again sir!

I want to add a gar to my tank once I upgrade this summer, I decided against the fatf. Talked to my cousin today, hes giving me his 300gal for a custom made metal stand for his new tank (figures I get the hand-me-downs.... again lol). I want to keep it kind of sparse and just focus on a few big fish.
