This is true for the vast majority of fresh and saltwater fish species. There are a few rare exceptions, less than 1% of the documented species has a set limit that we know of.
Fish tend to go through rapid growth in the first 6 months of their lives and then slow down. Of course all growth rates depend on the availability of food, abundance of predators and the genetics of the individual in question. It's pretty much impossible to tell a fish's age based on size unless you raised it from egg state.
