I just set up a 125 gallon with as natural of a setup as I could. The tank features driftwood and rocks and will soon be loaded with live plants. The problem is, I have no idea how to create an ideal stocklist. I am willing to hear any suggestions and all are appreciated. I am certain that I prefer sunfish and such over darters and minnow types. What are some good, attractive combos, and how many of each would comfortably and aesthetically fit in a 125? I am willing to do a predator tank even. Pickerel are awesome to me. Still, the more variety the better. This includes invertebrates too. I want an interesting tank. Please help and thank you in advance.

Centrarchids and Pikes or Pickeral usually do not do well together, in a 125g you could put stonecats, Bullheads, Large Sculpin as bottom dwellers, any of the Med to large sunfish as a midlevel (Pumpkinseed, Redbreast, Bluegill, Longear, Spotted, Warmouth, Green etc), or Rockbass; and you could do some Northern studfish or Seminole Killifish as top water.....other Ideas are sleepers, golden and common shiners etc.

Awesome! Thank you! Is there no possible way to decorate that could enable the pickerel?

I know crappiekeeper had a 60 gallon with a Redfin pickeral, black crappie, and a redbreast sunfish and the pickeral wasn't the problem. The redbreast actually beat the crappie to death and almost did the same to the pickeral. I'm pretty sure he fed the redbreast to his bass he has in a pond.

Bottom line is it has to be doable somehow, even if that somehow depends on individual fish personality. Pickeral are known to take fish 1/3 of their size though so if you have an 8" redbreast, a 12" pickeral wouldn't be able to eat it, and im pretty sure that they only kill for food.

Another option would be dividing the tank but I'd also ask crappiekeeper if he did anything special.

Its been tried many times....the only time Ive ever heard it was successfull it was Chain Pickeral with Largemouth bass with a lot of cover and logs in a med sized pond (about an 1 1/2 acre in size). It works for awhile....but theyre natural competitors and it seems usually just don't like to be confined with each other in a tank.
