P. brachyura - anyone lucky enough to have one?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not having a 'real tank' does not show lack of commitment or interest. Everyone starts somewhere. There are many huge fish I'd love to have but have the sense not to get them due to having a 220. However in the past 2 years. I went from a 50gal to a 125 then my 220 and one I've moved house I know I will have a bigger one. Probably more than double again. So don't tar everyone with the same brush, just because someone doesn't have the space/money you have doesn't mean they instantly loose their right to an opinion. However haters need to keep their hate to themselves and let people lucky enough to be able to even consider something this awesome to just get on with their research!

Out of interest though as it started as an ace thread, what sort of footprint does the 3k have?

well said fenton you have my appologies...my comments were in no way intended for you. Someone else stated noone actually upgrades or builds larger tanks when they say they will and i think this is the biggest part of the hobby we all go through. It is also what makes it fun. Noone starts out with a massive tank thats just unrealistic. I would have never learned to build tanks or "upgrade" if i did not aquire and grow fish that needed a larger tank. I am just an average "joe" i am not rich, i am actually very low income as a self imployed artist and i much enjoy sharing my knowledge and techniques of building/repairing tanks to show that you dont need to have money to have big tanks and be a big part of this hobby. I have never had money laying around and have to basically make everything i need from scratch or "junk" i can find from other people for free or cheap. Not trying to hate on the rest of our community, i would never have what i do now if it wernt from reading/learning from everyone else on here when i was a noob. IMO its very hipicritical to say large fish should not be sold when this entire forum is based on keeping them? Best part is all i did was start a thread to ask if anyone had one of these rays and some people do. I said it would be amazing if they were even available well knowing myself that it was a ridiculous thought. I simply like there patterning compared to run of the mill motoros and was interested in something "similar". Somehow this turned into a bunch of hippie bs so i replied with just as hanous remarks. The real issue depleting numbers of our monster friends is the fishing industry, not people trying to keep them alive in small enclousures. Do a google search for the P. brachyura and you will see them dead hanging from trees with anglers smiling for a pic. IMO that is alot worse than what we as keepers intend to do with them.

It not the case of having as you call a real tank

Its people do research and read how big say motoro get yet they still go out and buy one for a 75g its like for some reason the info on size is wrong or they don't get that big

As for me having a light stocked tank I would say that's wrong 4 x adult p14 fill up a 8x6 giving them room to get out of each others way

Even tigers and flowers get to big for nearly all normal home aquarium I wouldn't buy one

The reason most new comers to rays go wrong is the tank is to small to start with
The more water you have the slower a impact of a problem has on the fish

has nothing to do with being arrogant or a j/a...and absolutly has nothing to do with money as u probably make more than i do in a week, i guarentee u do as i go months with no income being self employed. Funny you dont have an opinion about what were even talking about. The debate is about large fish being sold when our entire forum is based of keeping them.

I just lost all respect for you after your comments to the majority of the people who use this site.

Another member for the ignore list.

My comment was simply an example....im not the one who threw the first stone in this debate. Funny thing is i agree with all of you in that not an everyday person should care for most of the fish available in the hobby. Not everyone should b attacked for bringing up a certain species either. Its like i already have one and put it in a bathtub. Thats room for hanous remarks, so yeah sue me for throwing stones back.

when you have an olympic swimming pool size aquarium available for one let me know. Until then I still suggest its not a good idea..whether you are allowed to keep one is besides the point..... I have kept groups of adult sized Tigers....Brachyura make those look like tadpoles.
I have tried to import them. I could get a minimum of 10. I needed to place the other 8 (at cost price) and STILL I was turned down by several international aquariums that BUY other rays from me!...I can only wonder why.... I guess nothing to do with getting to be up to 1000lbs or 7' across or eating 3 cows and an elephant each day probably?
B's are also thought to be at least partly migratory, another problem that is impossible to deal with in an aq. Very little is known about them.

When I reach that point I'll consider it. It is in my plans. Not right now but I once i am in my house w/ my land(just a matter of timing) I am building massive displays. You particularly didn't say is shouldn't be available, that was t1. As well as a few others. Like you said you don't recommend one until x person has the pool.

As to being besides the point of ability to own them, that is the point. My first post was about how everyone all over say "x fish shouldn't be allowed in the hobby". If I have the money, will and the energy to figure out how to keep it alive I should be able to get a great white if I wanted.

As to the migratory possibilities. 100's of other fish we keep are at least in some way migratory. A prime example is an uncommon fish but present american eels. They go into full salt yet they are still kept successfully. One good way to learn about a species to am extent is to keep one in captivity. The other is to study it in its home. Since there is an almost impossible chance to follow them in their habitat captive fish will provide the best knowledge about them. There are many different rays that we don't know much about, but we learn so much about in the tanks.

As to feeding a large fish that is the least of concerns for someone like myself. I am an avid fisherman and the larger the fish I have the easier it is for me to feed. I catch all kinds of fish from redhorse to pike or walleyes. I feed them to my fish. I go fishing anyway I just keep them for my fish. The bigger the fish the less work it is for me prepping the food. When I can feed whole fish to my fish it is so much easier.

My only hold up right now is space. I only have space for one real display so I have been selling my gars to allow me to focus on my rays and aros. That is just due to me being in my apartment until I find my house.

The only thing we should be doing is encouraging research before buying. Not saying weather or not a fish should be allowed, you give the government an inch, they'll take your balls. The government patrols sites like this and get ideas for banning things. In the end the more they ban the more money they get in pointless fines and restitution.

An example??? Read your comments again in your reply below.

Im very rational or i wouldnt have asked for info on other species with similiar looks....i also stated even the thought of owning one is pretty ridiculous. What gets me is the people who join the hate party dont even have "real" tanks, 500-1000 and up. If u only have a 180 u dont deserve to have an opinion becuase uve never cared for fish over 30". We all know most of the fish we keep will never attain adult sizes in our lifetimes. Some will come pretty close and thats what we strive for. Let me ask u all this question? How many fish of monster proportions even make it to 5-10' mark in the wild? Personally i feel we keepers keep alot of fish alive that wouldnt make it one year in the wild due to deformities, health issues, etc. So y is what we do so wrong. Were supposed to all share information here and learn...not have a period becuase u think ur part of the epa. U people truely make me laugh...

A "real" tank is whatever someone wants it to be. It doesnt matter what size tank someone has. This site is for everyone. We "all" start somewhere. What you fail to see is the fact that there are a couple members on here that like to push buttons. Grow up...be the bigger person and dont even pay attention. This is one of the main reasons I stopped posting in this sub forum. Tired of all the back and forth bickering. How is anyone suppose to learn anything thru all of this.

to SilentBob...my appologies, bad example after rereading, should have never added the second part. Im not trying to act like im better than anyone else and i sure as hell aint no rich guy with everything in the world at my finger tips. I too started with just a 30 gal over 15yrs ago and thought it was the bees knees so i understand what your sayin. Yes i have been ruined and look at most peoples dream tanks and think, hey thats a good filter, but still shouldnt have said what i did. Agreed i should not have fed the fire, im a first timer over here in Ray city. People are far more friendly over in the DIY section where i find my home lol... Also agreed theres alooooot of battles like this lately everywhere. This site was not like this in 06' when i joined. Sorry to everyone for not helping make it better to simply share and learn.
