Great Barracuda - Ethical treatment question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't buy it. Yea it's messed up, but is it any worse than the stores selling RTC, pacu, Pima, aro, and half the other fish that everyone here has? If you really want to do this fish a favor, give the guy his 10$ and euthanize. My lfs carries dovii for 2.99 and 80% go into 55 gallon tanks. It is what it is brotha.

I see where you're coming from. But I believe those fish you listed above are all captive bred. Great Barracudas are not captive bred, to my knowledge. Meaning this individual was taken from the wild.

im doing the wrong thing in somebodys eyes either way lol ... who knows ... by the time i get my next day off he could be gone

I would buy it. Grow it out and do that 600 and thn I'm sure a local aquarium would be more then happy to take such a cool fish in.

I was getting nervous reading 2 pages of people telling you to "free" him. Horrible idea. If I were to listen to 1 person on this topic, zoodiver knows what's up and everyone else saw free willy too many times. Wouldn't buy a fish you can't house properly, it can become very stressful and depressing when he hits 4' and then ur the person who has a huge fish that can't turn and not the lfs.

its your choice... are you going to save/buy all the other fish and animals that suffer in pet stores? Cant "save" them all is what i know. i personally would leave it, life isnt perfect and it would be a tiresome life trying to correct everyone's "unethical practices" since everyone has their own idea of what is and isnt. either way the fish is damned. i could go on and on but its really all moot.

im looking at it the same way ... i really want him ... but i think ill get to attached, and ill get heartbroken

I dont think you should get him. The fact that you can provide the best care for it in your immediate area isnt a reason to get him. It still wont have adequate space and simply wont be able to thrive, even if it will suffer more in the hands of someone else. You are going to have a nice, large aquarium that you can house many other species that will thrive in your tank instead. Why take in an animal you cant house when you can have other species that will thrive?

Just like any other monster, aquariums usually dont want to rescue your monster even if they already have a school of that species. It is simply a huge, potentially costly risk to take in someone's inappropriately cared for fish. As much as you say the animal is healthy, the aquarium cant take people's word and they have to assume there could be a disease or other health problems that they cant afford or waste time to fix.

Releasing a fish is never a good option, even in a gigantic system like the ocean. For years the mentality was, dilution is the solution to pollution. Well you can only dilute so much and now we are seeing how polluted and hurt the ocean really is. You will probably never know if the released fish did cause an environmental problem, but if one fish suffering is pulling at your heart strings, think about the potential environmental problems that a released fish can cause, even if the chances are extremely small. Also think about it this way. Some people can have a disease for a decade and not know they are sick, so can any of us ever be 100% sure that our animals have absolutely no health problems? Aslo, some animals are only carriers of diseases and never become sick....

I know its sad to see monsters in small tanks for sale. Its probably not going to end well for the fish, but do you want to see it suffering everyday in your own tank? You and your fish will be happier if you simply stick with fish that will thrive under the conditions that you can provide.

And as it is against the law virtually everywhere to release captive fish, and MFK does not support illegal behavior, no one here should be suggesting the release of anything

thank you for your opinion and i have decided againt getting him ... ill house a few nice rays instead :)

Good plan! :)
