Armatus and ATF as tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Probably won't work as Armatus will swallow an ATF like it was a smelt. My 6" RTG just ate a 4" TATF like it was nothing and still had room to eat more. ATF are pretty dumb when small and just tend to dash around the tank like a minnow. Even my 12" Vittatus gets the chase put on him by my pbass, indo and RTG. He's always having to look behind his shoulder!

I heard armatus can swallow very large meals. A 4-5 inch fish thrown into a tank which has an established fish nearly twice its size is a bad idea. Even if the Armatus doesn't eat the ATf, soon the armatus will get significantly bigger and the ATF will just be an easy meal.

Armatus can eat fish much larger than you would think. They've been known to eat tankmates 2/3 their size. Youtube it even for proof lol

Yep.

Heres a vid of an army taking down a pbass of about half his size...

Theres even an episode of river monsters where Jeremy pulls a struggling armatus out of the water beside his boat and pulls another fish out of its throat basicly the same size as the armatus itself.

saw that episode. They were pretty much the same size. it's kinda strange that my Fang acts nothing like the 'gruesome" armatuses you guys portray. Fang just chill in the same area each day and humbley lets my red wolf take all the food.

I know a LOT of people disagree with my opinion on this, but I really think that the process of being fed by humans really helps to tame these fish.

Why should they put forth the enery to savagely hunt for food and risk harm when perfectly sized nuggets of food are provided at regular intervals? I'm convinced that these guys tame out over time. The instinct is still there of course, but they get lazy after a while.

I agree, only rarely in the wild will a fish let you feed it by hand (depending on the species of course). But in a captivity situation they can sometimes become tame enough for their owners to physically handle.
