sbuse, that all makes sense, I hadn't thought too much about the difference in equatorial climate vs. northern Australia. Good luck with your project!
Asians have been bred in much higher number then any other arowanas combined. It is exponentially easier to spawn long term captive fish vs wild fish or even short term captive breeding. Things like leis or blacks are mainly wild fish and that makes them harder to spawn since they will be more effected by the triggers. This same thing doesn't apply to prolific species of fish like rays or cichlids. They because of their nature are easier. Some individual groups of subspecies are harder then others from those groups of mention fish but generally speaking. Also I believe that they have easier to replicate conditions/triggers to spawn then those of any other arowana. The other sp. Of arowanas experience a much more drastic change in seasons compared to Asian aros.
Now having said that not as many people have had as many groups of other aros as with Asians. Most that have other aros have one or two. Not great for in house breeding. I am personally going to try breeding all legal aros in the us. Not expecting much but I want to try.
I am not exactly saying the op shouldn't try it. What I am saying is that aussy aros are more aggressive then sa or asian aros so it only makes it even harder. If the op has the funds(braised off his resent sales thread, maybe not) I say go for it. As I said get a group to have a group not with the sole goal to breed as you will most likely not succeed.

My sales thread was up to get rid of what i like to call "vanity" fish. My female leo had to go because she is not mature yet and i have no time/desire to have her taking up space while she matures. I have recently had some changes, actually saturday i had something happen, where i will not be selling any of the fish i have left and i am going to begin construction on a few more 300+ gallon tanks(1 for a pair of oscars, 1 for my pair of azul peacock bass) and a 1k gallon tank for the pair of rays. I dont tend to keep fish i'm not trying to breed and i really wanted to move. Enlight of saturdays events i will not be moving and will be putting a lot of money into a serious breeding project with a bunch of different species. I will be building 3 other large tanks as well for 2 groups of Petros i'm going to be getting and a breeding group of Moba frontosa. I may have even had the funds to buy out Jeff Rapps rare red spotted leis and build them a big enough tank and was curious if it was a good idea. Just because i was selling some stuff doesnt mean i went broke lol. As you can see with all the above mentioned projects money is certainly NOT the issue. And i would be buying them with the sole purpose of breeding in mind, just because it hasnt been done doesnt mean i couldnt be the first. I will definitely do a lot more research now before buying them now though and maybe in a year or two ill pick up a group.

Well if you have 4k to drop on over priced fish more power to you. Jeff's "rare red spotted leis" are just standard leis give that name to sound higher value. All leis are red spotted, and they are the rarest aros to find state side. Those should be in the $200-260 class for price. Not $500 each. There is a reason he still has them and has had them a while and it is because they are unhealthy. Not to mention another 2k for a tank for them to spawn in. If I remember right you were letting your fish go due to a lack of work, not due to a lack of patience. Since you say now it was due to a lack of patience for a ray to mature how long do you think an aros group will take to get to spawning age? 90% of noncichlid fish take a few years to get to spawning age rays are actually on the faster side of it. You'd be looking at 2-3 years before you even had a chance to spawn them. That is not even taking into the effect of the climate triggers. You do realize that the rains in Australia make some rivers rise 20'? Or the dry season makes 90% of those same rivers to be dry river bed? Try to simulate that in a tank and you'll see what I am saying. One way to try it would be hormones or milting that is the way the DNR does it. They do it that way because of the near impossible conditions to replicate. It is much more cost efficient to do it that way instead of pond raising them. They breed everything able to breed in Asia, yet leis or even jars are not high or even on the list that they breed, there is a reason for it. You'll spend 6-10x more trying to get them to spawn then you'll ever make back from selling the fry. All this money and effort is just in trying to get them to spawn, that is not even opening the box of raising the fry to sellable sizes. Also in Asia the farms are outdoor mud ponds so nature is giving the triggers needed for the fish to spawn. They are not trying to reinvent the wheel indoors. If they had to chances are they wouldn't breed anything.
If you really want to try to breed aros get silvers or blacks. Silvers would be the best bet as a lot are farmed even though the way they are farmed is as close to wild fish as it can get. They net of a section of the river and keep a group of aros in it. There is something said about exposing them to certain moon phases after conditioning them with a simulated dry season and then flood stage. Along with a temp flux to match the two cycles. I know a guy did it in Hawaii with outdoor pools and a group raised together from fry(silvers).
I am going to try it, as I have always wanted to. It is just for a personal quest not to try for profit. From your posts I am getting the vibe your in it to try and make a "quick buck". You have a better chance at that with rays or cichlids then anything in the aro world with your location.
Also if your gonna try it a pool would be your best bet. You need to figure out a better system then you did with that silver that you had before. As you know from that they do jump.

LOLOL So far your research seems to be asking questions on a forum that could have been answered with a quick Google search. Then you might have found out what "Rapps Rare Red Spotted Leis" were.
Thanks for the info. I will be buying a group of zebra plecos. They dont breed until around 4 years of age and only wc juvies are available on the market currently so with some things i am willing to go the time route. I used to have a business with 122 tanks of africans. Easy to breed, not a whole lot of time and some of my strains were the nicest africans on the market. 4 had wait lists. I would keep the little leo now but she was sold before sunday(when my position changed) so whats done is done. I have the means to build her her own tank now which i didnt have when i sold her. Things change, s*** happens. After losing my silver i would definitely do things differently. He was free and i was in no way prepared for an arow.
I appreciate your knowledge on the arows and thanks for being helpful. I dont have a whole lot of time to research at the moment and i would rather hear from other members than read literature. Thats what this site is here for anyway. No point in having the site if everyone acts like a tool and says "google it".
Look i caught on to the google search. shut your mouth and quit flaming my thread. I dont have very much spare time to do much research right now(if people dont want to help they dont have to answer) so this is the place to ask so go be unhelpful on someone elses thread and move on.
Note: my post about rapps leis I was not saying they are unhealthy. I was trying to say "it is not because they are unhealthy." I am sure rapps leis are as healthy as any, what I ment was it was the price behind why he still has them. I am willing to bet his "long time captive" tropical gars are from the last time he brought them in and had them over price then. He has some good deals, but several fish are overpriced. Maybe he over paid for them, but I doubt that since he has been in the business so long. I have just started and I won't over pay for fish.
There was a big flux of zebras a little bit ago. Ungy was moving a huge group of sub adults I believe. They were at a great price maybe check with him to see if he has any left. If my funds were straight I would have bought a big lot from him at that time.
Like I said get your stuff ready and shoot for a group of silvers. That is your best bet and cheapest bet to try for a spawn. I have tried several times to get groups of silvers. Every time it has blown up in my face. So I was out with aros until I found blacks. When I did find them I got 20. I picked 4 for me that had similar attitudes but have slight differences in jaw structure and dominance in hopes to get a mix of m/f. It is a start to my quest. In the end I'll need to get another 6-10 for breeding trials. I just know I am not in the best spot right now for aros breeding trials on that scale. That will be in a few years.
