I've fed pinkies to him before, but he's a lot bigger now, and could easily eat most size mice.. Just curious if it's worth it nutrition/ digestion wise.. Can my jag handle the mouse bones? I know he can with other fish but I'm not sure.. Any input would help.

This is bad for your fish and its environment, and frankly just kinda blatantly sadistic.

The only reason to ever feed a mouse to your fish is because you want to see it eat something cute, viciously, and that's lame.

They do not digest mamalian tissue well, and bones wouldn't be good for them either. Blood and gore will foul up your water.

It's both scientifically and morally lame.

I won't even go into subjective criticisms.

Fish are not wires to digest mammalian protein on a regular basis. Do not do it.

You are harming your fish, you are harming your system.

It wouldn't add anything nutritional that you would be missing in a normal diet. They don't eat mice in the wild, so I wouldn't bother feeding them in captivity either.

Stick with what you fish would normally eat; other fish, crustaceans, and insects. With the high value prepared foods available today, it's wise to make these the staple and the live/frozen foods a regular treat. Although wild jags would eat a mouse, it would be only occasionally that they'd see one, thus they would not be a staple of their diet, which is why their digestive systems aren't geared to handling such a thing on a regular basis.

I agree that its not a nutritional benefit. buti disagree about what they might and might not eat in the wild:/ i am willing to be that all of the larger predatory cichlids will eat anything that will fit into their mouths! and no i personally dont think its sadistic or cruel. the only difference between feeding snakes mice and fish mice are that fish dont eat near as many in the wild and snakes mainly depend on them. so once in a great while couldnt hurt but what really are you proving? I fed my wild dovii mice because he wouldnt eat anything other than live for a good while. and dont get me wrong, i did not take any joy in have to feed live to my dovii. I totally prefer pellets, flakes, and frozen treats:) this thread will most likely be locked because of the controversy that will come of it.

No one said, Jason, that they won't eat mice if they get the opportunity.

But let us face it. The chances of one individual cichlid catching more than one mouse a year are zilch, or nearly there.

And mammalian protein is not to their benefit, as mcdonalds is not to ours.

It is ot the mouse per se ( i also feed lots of mice and rats to species that thrive on them ). It is the harm to the jaguar if fed regularly and the toll on water, in a closed system.

I have kept many a snapper in big tanks, and i know what the effect of mice guts and fur in a tank is.
