Hey I've been thinkin of trying to get into fly fishing, any idea on a good starter rod/reel? Thanks

I buy most of my fishing stuff at walmart, dicks sporting goods, and gander mountain. Out of these places gander mountain has some nice looking fly rods and reels. If I were you I would just pick up a cheap Shakespeare fly fishing starter kit. Just so u can get used to it then build off that

I fly fish and i have been threw the walmart junk kits when i first started out .. i would advise to stay away ...
i run the Lamson Konic II real 5-6w and a white river fly shops ultralight
the most important thing about a fly rod setup .. is the rod ... you need to buy light and good quality ... buy the nicest rod you can and just do a cheap reel for now .. then upgrade reels later

Dont give up and if ya can take an intro class or fish w/ those much better than you.
Learn to roll cast and go have fun.

I practiced for days outside in the lawn before i ever even went fishing with it ... I really did spend a whole week during summer 4 years ago alll day just casting on the lawn before i got half way decent ... it takes alot of patients and practice but it will be well worth it because you catch so many more fish (In my opinion) on fly rods ... you can dial in exactly where you want the fly to go ... i could land my fly in a 5 gal bucket lid from 25yards away every time ... or whip cans over
it is my favorite way to fish by far ... i cant wait to get a new 9-10w rod and real and go fly fish the ocean hehe ... that will be fun
EDIT: and also when you become as addicted to it as much as me ... you will start trying to tie flies ... it is fun because you can tie exactly the right flie for the specific hole you are fishing ...

I agree with getting a good rod. Fly fishing is addicting. For me it is my second favorite with the bow being my top pick and my heavy bait rigs at third unless I'm by myself. Then fly fishing is first with bait second.

I started with the cheap walmart rod and real kits that were mentioned above. It caught me my first salmon and many trout but the rod and real itself were very low quality. I am now into the next step up which is a good place for someone to start if they have a little bit extra to spend on a set up. I fish Streamside Prestige with a Streamside SP-78 reel. These are much better quality rod and reel kits that often go as sale combos. I remember paying $130.00 over all for my Walmart reel and rod and line while this new streamside kit with line and backing, along with rust proof and stainless metal reel, and case, cost me just over $360.00 Canadian. It also came with a two year warranty on all parts of the kit including the case. The owner of the fishing and hunting store told me that even if I was drunk and snapped my rod off rolling over a hill I could bring it back and get a brand new one no hastle. I was only 16 when I bought my walmart rod so I needed cheaper, but if it was me starting out now I would deffinitly start with one of these. Then again I didnt realize how much smoother this new one was without having used a much rougher one before.

like i said before i would spring for a better rod then that .. im sure its good to start out with ... but if you dont skip on the rod and just spend like another 50$ ... you will never need to buy another 8w and just buy a 20-30$ real
