How often do you clean your canister filters?.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I only have one can running at the moment, an FX5. I only clean it every 6 months and it usually doesn't need it. Come to think of it I haven't cleaned it since October. Well, tomorrow is Sunday..................

I think that a canister full of debrits and waste produces loads of nitrates so water changes cant completely get rid of them because they are being produced so fast that soon new produced nitrates replace the ones you remove with water changes, getting to a point on which you get forced to perform daily water changes unless you clean the canister up and thus factory of nitrates reduces its production enabeling you to only practice a couple of water changes per week until the canister gets full of waste again and then you get back forced to more frequent water changes.

i agree with fishbum with what he was talking about canisters not being nitrate machines, and i clean my canisters when ever i feel like it, i can do it once a month, every other month or every 3 months, aslong as my parameters are okay i dont give much thought to it

Ok dudes I finished up cleaning my stuff, here are the pictures.

Canister was really dirty, even the K1 was full of crap, honestly I dont see how some of you say you leave your canisters running so much time without cleaning them up, (mine was just exactly two months and it is in a tank with a solo 11" flowerhorn)unless you have a one or two more filtration systems.

The blue sponge was rinsed with the same water un the tank, it goes at the bottom of everything.

An the top of it I placed a 1.5 inch thick polyester pad.

In the second basket I placed 3/4 inch thick polyester pad, over it I placed some crushed coral and the bio balls.

In third basket, it only goes the K1 and it is good to go.

Yeah, that is what I mentioned above, you can leave your canister with no maintenance for a longer time if you have one or two more systems, otherwise I dont think you can go for longer that two months of even less time since most of ppl here are overstocked.

By the way, I missed the lubrication part.

I use Molykote compound 111, this is a waterproof food grade silicone grease.

I lube with it shaft, impeller and all the O rings.

Cheers.
