Amazing fish. Love those cichla. The reason for going bare bottom is for ease of cleaning? Also what is your water changing schedule/quantity, just for my information?

Love the blue on the azuls. BUt the others add the needed cichla green :)
You every try and find black pvc to ditch those ugly white spray bars?
I've though about it, but am a bit lazy. The ugly white pvc kind of grew on me after a while.

Looks awesome!! Love the set up, has good color now.

I had sand in there before, but the spray bars blew it all over the place as I am getting 10x turnover rate with my two pumps. It looked really fugly, so I removed all the sand. I have had gravel in the past and did not like it. Bare bottom is definitely easy to clean. If I added something to the bottom, I would choose tile, but I think the tank looks fine the way it is now. I change ~60% once a week and will vacuum poop that is trapped against the strainers to my drains every few days and replenish that water.

That's a fantastic tank, I think barebottom really is the way forward for big tanks. It's nice to have sand but if you can't maintain it then it becomes a eye saw, particularly when it sticks to catfish and rays.

Even thought about a tiled bottom?

What light unit are you using? the ligting seems fantastic for IMO a very cheap price
