Good day sir! Is there anybody try to train H. Scomb to eat non live foods? If yes? How long do i get it starve? Thanks in advance!

I have one, but he is still on live food for the fact my atf barely let's it eat in the first place . But I have seen other people keep them by themselves in a tank and try to dangle silversides till they attempt to eat it from the surface. I'm sure that they weren't using their hands but in most of the feeding videos I've seen, it was too dark to tell how. Maybe tongs or some kind of hanger used like a spear i would guess. Never hurts to try.

It depends on your scomb. They tend to be more skittish. Mine are extremely shy and won't even eat in front of me even after a few days of starving and I've had them for a few months. I've heard of some people doing it though and I saw a video on YouTube of one actually eating floating pellets.

Pretty sure that may have been my video. When I get on the computer later I'll see if I can dig it back up.

No I lied. It was just my tat eating pellets in the video.

Here's the method that I used to break both payaras:

That was a great read! I'm surprised they haven't updated the sticky with that method yet.
Sorry for hijacking the thread but mine are so skittish that they won't even eat in front of me. I've got 3 scombs about 5-1/2" and 2 armatus about 3-4" and they won't eat in front of me. I'll only see them eat once in a blue moon but when I check in the middle of the night, they'll all have full bellys. How do I go about training off of live if they're that skittish?

They'll get more confident as they get bigger. As they get to about 7" the scombs will get much more confident and the armies will take till about 12" before they start getting confident. Once the confidence sets in, they'll be much more amicable.

There is still a method one could use to get them used to the idea of you providing them food. Let them go 2-3 days between feedings each feeding. This will stress the fish some and will work up a powerful hunger in them. Once you add the food to the tank, they'll be hungry enough to go after the food. After 2-3 weeks of this, they'll begin to associate you with food. This process will work better if you don't get very close to the tank unless you're feeding them.

Once they associate you with food and with eating what YOU drop in the tank, you'll be able to start using the fishing method that I wrote up in that link I gave you.

It's not stickied because essentially everything covered in that post is included in the Payara sticky already. I really need to get around to updating that, now that I think of it. :/
