I have a 38 gal community tank with corys neon tetras , platys ,hatchets, and a couple of rainbows.I had a couple of german blue rams that died when I went on vacation.I went to the pet store to get acouple more dwarf ciclids and the owner talked me into getting a gymno neon blue valentine.the fish is beautiful but I didn't get to research it before I got it.my question is .Can I put it in a 10 gal tank during cool down and what other fish are there that can also handle a cooldown period?

Great idea to put it in a 10g for the winter for cool down!

Some cories and tetras can handle the cool. A 10s a bit small for Buenos Aires tetras or I'd recommend those. Black tetras might also work.

1 might handle a 10gal, because in the cool down their metabolism does slow a bit.
Any of the fish from Uruguay, or Argentina would be good tank mates (this would include Buenos Aires tetras), also some of the Mexican high altitude live bearers would be a good choice.
I keep Uruguayan Gymnos with Uruguayan Corydorus erhardti, and the Mexican live bearer Xenotoca eiseni.

Even rosy barbs can handle some of the lower temps, as they come from cool waters as far north as China.

thank you for the input. now ive only had him for 2 weeks .when should I start the cooldown and when its done can I put him back in the 38 gal?

I'd start your cool down late fall and start warming them back up in the spring. The easiest way, as Duane said, is to just keep them in unheated tanks. All my Uruguayan fish are in unheated tanks with temps ranging from the mid 50s in the winter to the mid 80s in the summer.
