Hey guys.....was just looking up info on hystrix and i found this thread. I recieved a "hystrix ray" from pet solutions last week and one today. John has been a great help there btw. I noticed the conversation about them possibly not being true hystrix. Im new to the rays and was wondering if someone could take a look and tell me if they are and if not what kind they are. Would appreciate it. Sorry the pics are blurry but these little guys dont hold still.IMAG0157.jpgIMAG0195.jpg

That looks like it could be and orbignyi. Like I said the ones I've seen that came from them are orbignyies this is the orbi that I saved from a lfs but it originally came from pet solutions. Poor dears look scrawny. iir they get bigger then retics/true hystrixs... how much idk.

Can anyone tell me what normal behavior is for a newly added ray. Just got my little girl yesturday and shes spent most of her time swimming at the top of the tank near the air bubbles. We have a power head and air stone near the bottom of the tank, and a 18" air strip in the back. She mostly swims above that. She doesnt spend much time in the bottom. She did come down to eat last nite. Iv tried researching behavior and every place i find says her behavior means something different....one place says the swimming at the top or up the sides is bad....another says that means the ray is happy. Im new to rays and have done a ton of research, but im very far from experienced. We just want her to be healthy and comfortable.

Also, i noticed her belly was pretty pink in the bag, which im assuming is from the ammonia level being so high during transport. Is there anything that can be done to heal that properly or is it something that will go away over time with the clean tank water? Some of the spots are pretty raw looking.

I think rays just like bubbles my old retic would swim up the glass in from my sponge filter
