rtc breathing heavy and rapidly

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I'de personally drop it down to 76-78 and see if it helps. amazing how a few degrees sometimes does it. it also may be why even w/ sufficient filtration/water movement he's still gasping warmer the water the less o2 it holds but if you drop it too low they get digestion issues... you'de think critters from the wild wouldn't be so darn touchy.. but sometimes they are!

As for the prazi that link should answer your Q's otherwise be glad to go more indepth if you need to. but I think TBTB covers it all really well.

I apologize if you know the following but I have to ask: How long has the tank been running? If this is your first fish in the tank then it is likely ammonia/nitrites from a cycling tank causing the fish to breathe hard. I also apologize if you did this already but I've noticed that the majority do not read the directions on the api test kits. If you don't shake the bottles extremely well before using you will most likely get a reading of 0. Also, you have to wait a few minutes before you compare the colors...it takes time for the reagents to react.

It's not my first tank it's been up and running for 6 months housing a dat and a fire eel and I know it's not enough for them but I have a 500g waiting for them

I had this with my one hoplias mala he was always breathing heavy it lasted for like a month then he just stopped hasn't done it again since

Ahh I see. No worries on the fish, you can do what you want with them. I just had to ask since its a common situation. Hopefully it gets better.

IMHO, you are asking helpful, relevant, well-thought-through questions. Making sure that the kit is reliable and is used properly is essential to any troubleshooting.
