Breaking a baby Odoe from live food

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouodnt add a goldy ... if he's eyeing the krill its a good sign ... he shouldnt be too difficult to convert, plus with a 10 gallon, more fish is more possibility of a water parameter swing ... as soon as he takes the krill, next time try a floating pellet ... if you get him on carnivore sticks your golden!

OK thanks someone else already suggested the carnivore sticks. The water temps are like 79-81 degrees pretty warm so his metabolism will speed up and he'll get hungrier?!?! Is this a good idea? it worked with my lizards IDK about fish though.

OK just added a tinfoil barb like 6 hours ago, the odoe looked at him as if he wanted to attack him but then thought not to. I fed him two small rosies today like now since it has been about two days since I got him (Tuesday afternoon). Anymore advice?

I dont want to push you into stressing a small fish, but fish can go a long time without eating ... I'd say try for 3-4 days this time, and hopefully with the new fish eating not live food he will break ... I found that my odoe loved hitting the surface for freeze dried krill ... just watch his behavior, if he looks stressed, feed him, if he's acting normal continue to try to krill

He digested the rosies almost completely by now (6hours), wow he digests quickly! BTWs would the fishing string method work for him with krill?

my tinfoil is too small to eat the pieces of krill lol what do I do? should I just try to get the Odoe on cichlid granules? Or should I just wait till he's 4 inches? I know Djaalix you recommend getting him off live, but aren't odoes strictly piscivores and grow faster on fish? IDK if I'm right onthis but on other fish they grow faster on pellets and krill... but Odoes diet in the wild is mainly fish like morymids...

You're correct about them being picsivores, but given the questionable quality of the feeders most of us have available, it's generally considered better to get them on almost anything else.
Like I mentioned above, it took my guy a while, but he is one of the most aggressive feeders in my 180 (and there's a wolf fish in there!). Every night I throw about 15 pieces of stuffed shrimp in the tank and he is ALWAYS the first to grab a piece.

I understand wanting to feed him live while he's young, and I usually do the same. I did it with my ATF, and I'm currently feeding my 2" p. bass Rosie's as well. Just start converting him sooner rather than later. I'm trying to convert my tiger fish now, and its not easy.
It may very well be best to just make sure he's eating while he's young, but plan on converting him once he's put on some mass.

Good luck with the little guy. Attached is a pick of mine, just so you know what's coming.
