New Giraffe catfish (Auchenoglanis occidentalis)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks. I don't think I had a thread for it. I lost him to a nasty pH change. Didn't pay attention to my water for like a week and did a heavy water change and the tap water was way high. I lost a lot of fish that day.

Sorry to hear. Then tell us a bit about him: how long you had had him, how big it got how soon, tanks, diets, tankmates, etc. whatever you find interesting to report. If you will, of course :) Or if you wanna move on and leave the past in the past, that'd be fine too :)

Well I bought him at an inch, wild caught from the white violta river. He was the smallest and healthiest fish in the batch. He grew to 4-5" by feb(got him in late October). Was growing him out for a friend to grow into his 240, when he hit the 12" mark. He was in my 125 housed with a group of twelve 3-5" discus a pair of angels a couple 3" exotic plecos and a pictus cat. He ate a mixed diet consisting of hikari sinking carnivore, earthworms, blood worms, algae wafers, fresh veggies and market shrimp. But early to mid February I had a nasty pH change and it rose to 8.2 from 7.0-3 in less then three days. Lost all my stock except the pictus. Was so sad when I lost him because he'd eat from my hand and come to the surface when I entered the room, just an all around awesome fish. So when I saw this guy, I had to have it.

Nice account. Thanks for sharing. ~1" a month growth sounds ok. Hand-feeding at 5"? That's special.

If you will, make this a grow-out thread for your new guy and come back with updates every now and then.

Can't wait. One of my fav cats that I have yet to own. :)
