Filters: FX5, FX6 or Eheim 2260

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I also prefer my fx5s, they do the job and maintenance is a breeze. Haven't had any issues.

Plus, you could find 3 used fx5s for the price of one 2262.

I have three that I got for $200 all together used.

One thing to think about is that most cannisters are a pain to constantly open. I am running a FX5 with biomax and the stock sponges. It is heavy when full and to open it up, clean it, and close is not a huge effort, but its still a pain. People also ended up having issues with the lid fasteners (including me). If you are running the 2080 and only care about mechanical filtration, I would think about getting an Aquaclear 110. Lots of flows and it will be much easier to open and rinse out the mechanical filtration.

If you do not want a HOB, then I would say go with the FX5. It is cheaper and from what I have read people like it more for mechanical and prefer Ehem for bio.

Thanks for all the replies, i have no option to get HOB, my tank will not allow for it.

so I am down to the FX5 and a 2260, I found a MOD for the 2260 to convert the 1260 pump to the 1262 with little effort.

My question them to the FX5 owners is how hard it is to clean out the FX5? How hard is it to get to the pump and impellar? also would it be better to stack media in the baskets or without?

Also a question to the 2260 owners, would 5L Eheim Mech Pro followed by Eheim EHFI FIX with Aquaclay then a few bags of white filter floss work out?

I find the FX5 easy to clean, most filters are easy to clean its just putting them back together that can be painful. The FX5 is easy to put back together so its user friendly. It's 4 screws to get the motor off which are easy to reach and the impeller is easy to remove and put back. I've never ran the filter without the baskets since that's where the mechanical filtration comes from.

Hi

Both are great filters though personally I would go with the fx5. I have one on my turtle and PBass grow out tank (just a tad bit bigger than the dimensions in the op) and it does a great job mech wise. Also have one on my big tank.

I have had my first for almost 7 years and has not skipped a beat. I have 2 fx5's and both seem reliable (not a big sample I know) and are pretty easy and straight forward to clean as far as canisters go. I have heard a people having issues with them (reliability) but have not experienced any myself.

Also in Aust. you should be able to get the fx5 for a decent price. I find that Eheims are overpriced in Australia. Which is a shame as they are really great filters. If you check out thereefshop.com.au they have them for a good price and free delivery.

My experience with canister filters and mech cleaning is that canisters sucks at that part..there is no canister filter that would do the job half that good as internal filter does.. To get a bit better at mech cleaning you have to get atleast surface skimmer which you attach on canister intake hose but still - for mech cleaning i highly recommend internal filter

For using 2080 only as bio filter, attach eheim prefilter on both intake hoses so all big particles stays on it - then just snap them off and clean when dirty, while bio material in canister stays clean longer :)

for the 2080, I have both inlets through a 2260 intake pipe with a sponge filter attached to the bottom, i find this is better than 2 intake pipes and prefilters. also i have the 2080 inlets half way down the tank so thet dont pick up the fish poop!

the FX5 or 2260 would have the strainer at the bottom of the tank to collect all the poop!

i think from the comments in this thread it would seem that the 2260 is the true work horse out of the FX5 and the 2260! proven, unbreakable tech!

thanks for your help!
