True piraiba catfish and difference from capepretum

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

Wow thanks for that. :) I will be adding this link to our already up and going thread on this very topic. I had a feeling that the ones we were seeing were actually capapretum but until I saw this post no one was very certain or could agree on it. For sure the fish in your pic matches up with what I had in my mind as a juvie fila. Thanks!!! lol, btw do you accept monthly payments??? haha

Very interesting, but it makes me wonder: Why is the filamentosum so rare in the hobby if it has such a widespread area that it lives?

It isn't the fact of how widespread it is. THey have a migratory route that rivals that of any freshwater fish on the planet. They spawn in a specific location. The young then swim down stream as they grow. Collectors must find the juvenile fish. Obviously until recently the ones that were being imported to the USA were assumed to be filamentosum, when in fact they were capapretum. They are similar. True filas have been imported to asia for a long time now. THe real issue is that the species were only just separated just a few years back. So the distinction is just now becoming clear. The collection point for the fila and for the cap must be different.

very nice Wes!!

WOW, must say both fish are stunning but seeing them next to eachother the subtle differences if they are blanket would be readily IDable in the future. I would happily own either in the future =)

A good book that shows what is being talked about here in terms of being over fished is a book called the catfish connection. Shows the migratory routes of large pimelodid catfish, and the decline in numbers and size of fish over a period of time.

Exciting that we can now see which species we are actually getting. Too bad on the price though. Seems you will only get serious buyers with a price like that. I would def buy one if I had 3-4k laying around lol.
