Really depend on the fish. Mbunas or worse petrochromis require large overpopulated communities to work, SA cichlids will not work that way.

Completely agree - intentionally overcrowding mbuna is a great way to reduce aggression. You just need more filtration and water changes...

This is an accepted practice for mbuna tanks. As long as water quality is good, fish has no problems. In fact this is better than what some people do, which is 2 fish per species.
