Company: Glass Cages

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Been doing a bit of research for the 210 I'm about to setup and ran across a thread about a large glass cages expoding. I personally have no experience with them but I did discover that at least one period, they were using non-tempered bottoms because they were easier to work with (drill) ... Doesn't make much sense though because other manufacturers drill then temper ...

Food for though..

I've had a Glass Cages 300 wide set up and running for almost 2 years now and couldn't be happier with it. The price was awesome, and since it was so reasonable, I upgraded to the starphire glass, which is clear as acrylic. I consider it a show tank, it's in my living room.

I paid the extra freight to have it delivered to my house. Couldn't get another truck to drive to an access point, unload it from their truck into another then move to my house - too much work. As it was, it took 6 people to move it from my garage to the living room. Very heavy, built like a tank, but it looks like it will hold up forever.

Here's a picture after it was delivered to my garage:

There are reports all over the internet for all brands of large glass aquariums breaking. The issue is, it's just silicone holding everything together. As long as that's the main thing holding back 200+ gallons of water, you're going to see a lot of reports of tanks failing if you research it.

Large glass tanks make me nervous, and I personally don't keep anything over 125 gallons that's glass anymore. Too much of a risk for a bunch of water damage. Anything over 125 gallons, I don't mess with glass.

Exactly the same reasons I use acrylic for my in house displays.

All my glass tanks are now in the garage. Not to say you can't buy a large glass tank and have it last for years....just personal preference.

Im sure they do it for the fact that if it was your tank and later you changed your mind and then wanted to drill it and instill an overflow if it was tempered you would be unable to do it. I think most glass tanks fail from having stands that do not support the tank properly

I had a 300 tall from them. I owned it new for about 4 years and sold it 3 years ago. It is still running at the new owners house. For the money it is a solid tank. It will have a date written with marker on it. Thats the manufacture date. You should wait I think 30 days from that date to fill it up. It was defiinately not a show quality tank as they use a lot of euro bracing. I would never run a bare bottom with one I think it will look like crap. I had mine built into a wall so it covered most of the silicone and edges. I would use them again if I was buying a large glass tank. I hope this helps.

Yeah I just seen that :O do want. That's sure to amaze anyone. What would you stock it with?

She's gotten into brackish a bit. So probably go a male female Knight Goby pair some bumblebee's and as a grow out a Violet Goby for flare. :D

i tried to order from them a couple times. i loved the prices they quoted for glass for a plywood tank i was building. even paid for the glass becasue they said it would be delivered on a certin date. turns out they decided to cancel the delivery due to someone elses order that was placed after mine. becasue of this they told me it would be another 3 weeks before they could get my order to me. i did get a refund for the glass but i think it is bad buisness to quote someone a delivery date and then the day before tell them that they could not make the delivery becasue of someone elses order. i chose to support a local buisness even though it cost me a little bit more.
