My 1200G pond has seven exCichlasoma beani in there ranging between 5" and 8". This is their second year in the pond and they are doing very well, looking to be in top condition. I've been feeding them mainly on Tetra Pond Sticks, a floating stick that is quite low in protein (28%) and easily digested and spirulina pellets. Since 'beani' are rather prone to bloat, these foods seem to work well for them in that regard. Also the pond does provide a "low stress" environment which also helps. The temperature of the water today, July 24th is 23 C (73 F) and the water has gone from "green pea soup" to crystal clear once I put in a small UV unit. It took about 1 week to clear.

This is really neat. Reminds me of the pond our family had growing up (minus the Cichlids). Well done.

I would imagine if they can in Canada.

OP-very nice pond. Do you have gold saums in there too?

Yes, I have a pair out in the pond-a 10" male and a 7" female, who are presently guarding fry out there. They seem to be doing really well. I just wish I had a longer pond season here. I'm sure in Britain, cichlids would do very well outside, especially Uruguayan cichlids (Australoheros, Gymnogeophagus)

Awesome pond setup
Also, in regards to the beanis and bloat, protein really has little to none influence.
It is more related to stress which lowers their immune system and thus allows the parasites to cause bloat.
I have had great success raising my male and females on 38% protein.

I agree with you Endo. I also think keeping at a cooler temperature might help in that regard.
