Until yesterday I had 2 beautiful 7inch heckelli swimming about in my amazon 180 gallon community. I've had these guys from 1 inch fry and they have quickly become my favorite fish, mostly due to their gentle nature, behaviour and beauty.
In the past couple months I have noticed some courtship behaviour... gentle lip locking, gill flaring and flashing... I knew I had a pair. The female who started out as the smaller fish had outgrown my male by half an inch but much thicker in body and with a more rounded belly.
My plan was to purchase a 120 gallon 4x2 and see if I could breed them, however thats no longer an option.
When I got home from work yesterday the male heckelli was cowering in the top back corner of the tank. He had Basically been de-scaled and his beautiful fins reduced to bloody nubs. Nearly every part of his body had been torn up and he was barely alive. I quickly transferred him to my hospital tank but alas he passed away this morning.
The culpret of the tank had to be the female heckelli as the only other occupents are some uaru and a foursome of geo abalios who are all really peaceful.
This has been a big shock for me. These fish are amongst the most peaceful I have ever kept and its like the female had snapped to full psyko mode In a period of only a few hours.
I have checked on the internet and found similar stories of seemingly placid female heckelli changing to bloody killing machines over night. I am kicking myself for not researching this earlier as his death may have been avoided.

So I guess I am putting this out there as a sort of warning so my tragic miskake doesnt have to be yours... watch those female heckelli carefully, she could wake up on the wrong side of bed one day!

Thats a kick to the groin. I've heard of this and have 4, 1 being a year older than the other 3 and never really cared about sexing them but this has me curious now that I have a group. Is sexing possible without venting? How long did yours take to hit 7"? My oldest is 5-6" and started thinking that each cichlid I get from this lfs is smaller than expected but ones I get from other sources all reach full potential so I'm thinking I should stop getting cichlids there.

Yeah man I was gutted. He was my favorite fish and such a peaceful personality. Mine took probaby about 1.5 years to reach that size and the male had nicer colours and longer threads than the female. Also he was always the first to pose and flare at her.
I have a sub adult at about 4 inches and recently picked up a couple at 2 inches so we'll see how they go..
Here is a old pick of him, taken around 6 months ago...
Any pics of yours?

the male is strutting hi stuff though he is the smaller of the 3 males lol I can do is keep an eye on them. They are in a 7ft x 2 x 2 so hopefully it may not happen?

regards Len

Beautiful group mate. Mine were in a 6x2x2 so maybe the extra size will do the trick.
Best of luck as they are really underrated and awesome fish.

There is an article in the Oct 2006 Cichlid News mag by Radek Bednarczuk about his experience breeding heckelli, and warns about their aggression in all but the largest tanks.
I tried to introduce a new one into my group of 4 a little while back, it didn't last 48 hours.
They are about 7" now, but in what I consider a crowded cichlid community(which may help) of Tomocichla asfraci, Guianacara owruwefi, and Cryptoheros nanoluteus, so far aggression is minimal.
