Looking for some SA gentle giants

Hoplarchus can be pretty nasty, especially to each other. I wouldn't consider them "gentle"...

Uaru are amazing fish and truly gentle giants - highly intelligent, interactive...and won't eat even little fish.

Large barbs and that sort of thing can also be cool in a big tank.

Geophagus brasiliensis get about 12" and aren't too aggressive, completely different from red heads, and altifron types. Seems like most sa you either have, are too aggressive or aren't big enough for what you're looking to add. Crenicichoa johanna would work, not exactly a gentle giant but neither are true parrots.

Since people are talking barbs and other non-Cichlids that work. I'll throw out the idea of a nice Pleco. They get bigger than any Cichlid you'll get, and at that size look miraculous.

So several of you have replied about true parrots not being peaceful. I have read about heightened conspecific aggression when they are maturing, but all accounts I have read say that true parrots are peaceful to anything above the 8-10" mark.

I would love to hear more feedback on their aggression from someone who currently has or has kept these cichlids in the past. Honestly, I am very drawn to these fish because of their size and the reported peaceful nature of them, but if they are too aggressive, I will pass on getting them. I am not a keeper that enjoys much aggression.

I had one for a a bit, it attacked my severum and geophagus. It also took a chuck out of a pictus catfish, i was told they were peaceful but found it was anything but.

I know you said you've already considered Uaru, but I have to agree with Matt and give them a vouch! If you're after SA gentle giants to go with your parrots then Uaru fit the bill perfectly.

I have read a lot on Uaru and they definitely so do seem to fall in the category of gentle giants, but I just don't think Uaru have any color. To me it just looks like a big white fish with a smug of black near the middle.

That is concerning. :( I read a forum posting on one where the female and male harassed each other quite a bit, then the male jumped out of the tank and died. He reported on having the female in with some other similarly sized fish. He said everything was good in one post and then in a post a few days later, said he had to rehome it. No detail was given unfortunately.

I am wondering at this point whether these fish are like many cichlids where the personality of the individual turns some of them out to be monsters or if the people who have reported them as being peaceful had a little different definition of peaceful than what I do.

what about Hypsophrys nicaraguensis aka Nicaragua Cichlid, cetral but look more sa imo peacful too.

Uaru amphiacanthoides are brown with black and a red eye. Not really colorful, per se, but certainly not white (unless you're referring to Uaru fernandezyepezi, which are really challenging to keep HITH-free...
