Sad to hear that, I have heard similar stories about the species being usually peaceful but prone to extreme intra-species aggression. I had two males in my 210g tank years ago and they were pretty tolerant of each other, just the occasional stand off (which I once caught on camera here; http://youtu.be/oltN6r3eZ_E). I think it would have been a different story if there was a woman involved though!
I wonder if the female tank breeding aggression has anything to do with their natural spawn behavior, which is to burrow out tunnels along the banks (like gophers) then lure the male inside.
