difference between a wild caught jag and wild one

In nature, natural selection tends to weed out any weak specimens, so in theory a wild caught fish may have a stronger genetic background.
But if an entire school of young fry were caught, all at once, and raised, those fry may not have been subjected to the rigors of true natural selection (although their parents would have).
The case against feeding minnows is that you take the chance of introducing disease and parasites your fish may have no immunity to.

Duane - I'm not sure "stronger genetic background" is the best way to describe it.

Natural selection weeds out less well-adapted individuals to a particular environment.

To be clear, fish that are better adapted to life in Lake Nicaragua might not necessarily be better adapted to life in a glass box (perhaps just the opposite).

And the traits that Mother Nature values might not be the ones that hobbyists do.

I agree, I wrestled with "stronger genetic background" statement when I typed it.
And I also agree about adaptation to living in a glass box.
I sometimes think it's better to get tank bred individuals if not trying to breed.
Especially when the goal a varied, international cichlid community.
