My 14" blind tsn rescue

Just want to know whats the big issuse with live fish been using live fish, with other foods of course for 20+ years use about 400 every week never had a problem. I think its the stores who sell more than the live fish. I dont buy feeders from petco or petsmart cause they are usually horrible. Live fish earthworms and cut tilapia have never failed me fattning up a skinny fish. Been feeding my male MARBLE GOBY live fish for almost 5 years never had a problem, and most of the people on here who dont never get the same fish past 10 inches 12 if they are lucky, mine is 17 inches now.

Sounds like you lucked up as known feeders can cause diseases and illnesses if not properly processed and to each its own. I personally wouldn't feed nothing live I didn't breed and raise myself plus the catfish is blind so it gives a big disadvantage not being able to see its prey makes then that much harder to catch for him.

Doomiedee, you know me better than that, bro. I am a strong proponent of avoiding live feeding everywhere it can be avoided (no offence to MonsterMinis but to its each own... plus what she is doing is a rather special prep). If nowhere in the post it says live, as in my post, I'd always assume we are talking prepped/dead foods. Live feeding is special and hence must be explicitly stated.

Absolutely none taken, and I 100% agree w/ what you have to say in reguards to this. If he does have issues w/ taking dead ect I found my TSN really likes night crawlers ( much safer as far as disease ect. and has a much better balance of vits/nutrients then live feeders. ) One of the main reasons I feed live/dead is because I do not agree w/ using starving techniques on any pets, and my TSN almost starved to death refusing anything but live foods for a very long time. I also found my cats love frozen smelt (imo also a better balance of nutrients being a fw fish, and on the list of Thisamine free fish if that's important too you.) Most fish will "grow out" of strictly live feeding over time, and being careful w/ it still doesn't guarantee your fish won't get sick.. offa live, frozen, pellets we all have to decide what is best for our pets and learn from imo all aspects to really make those decisions.

Oh and agree he does look skinny but he looks a lot like my beast, and once you get him settled in ect potential to be a stunner.

Where can I find smelt? The good thing about mine is he eats everything I've thrown at him so far. Within 20 minutes he was munching pellets. I know what you mean thou big cats have always been the hardest fish for me to get eating some foods. At least ime.

20 + years isnt luck. U say the key words yourself properly processed. And that is the key, first step is a good store that has clean feeders that quarantine their fish. From what i see alot of people on this board go to stores that dont quarantine there fish let alone the feeders. Mine does unless they have a real busy week and sell the feeders on the floor and from the back. Which brings up step to quarantine the fish when i get them home for a week while being feed live worms, frozen worms,live and frozen shrimp and some frozen veggie cubes. Its expensive and time consuming and thats why people wont do it. If you buy dirty sickly fish and dump them strait in your tank u are asking for it of course. I stop using pellets years ago because they stink, foul the water and put a strain on the filtration, I run 10-20 tanks at a time and my house doesnt stink or smell like a fish store. When i used to breed a lot of cichlids and use pellets the smell was horrible and i had to do crazy amounts of water changes in a week. Good luck with your cat hope u get him fattened up soon.

Every week i get 400-600 feeders,10 ozs of live black worms,4 cups of live brine shrimp, 40-60 live ghost shrimp and a few crayfish as treats. with no problems

Interesting... thought I read that they DIDN'T.. i'll be damned.. time to switch back to silversides.. and we got them from the local grocery store frozen.

The thing is I don't have the tanks to properly process live food. The only reason I used the convict fry I wanted to see if it would eat them dead.

Sorry to jump in here,I have large cichlids, have been feeding pellets and your right the water is nasty....What can I feed to 10 big sa/ca cichlid That won't stink up the water?

Hard to say exactly because i dont always get the same combo of fish. Also buy other things and dont go through the recipt to see how much this or that was. I can tell you the price for the feeders at the store rosy reds 100 for $8, small goldfish 100 for $8, large goldfish 6 for $1, pond comets usually around 4-5 inches 3 for $1 ghost shrimp 6 for $1 and brine shrimp like $1 and some change per cup. Up until about 5 months ago feeders were $6 for 100 rosys or smale goldfish.
