Raw or cooked??????

So does that mean any food that a ray in the wild eats just passes right thru them? Sorry not trying to sound like a schmuck but that just doesn't make sense to me.

I have been feeding raw shrimp for some time now and it is one of the only things I feed my rays. I won't even bother with pellets unless it is a mixture of foods in a home made gelatin meal.

As of lately I am adding a powdered mixture into the raw shrimp. Similar idea to what reptile keepers would add to crickets. Replaces a lot of things that they are probably missing out on from what they would eat in the wild. So far seems to be going good.

Why do u not bother with pellets? Just curious...
Why not feed a variety of foods?

never ever heard of that, and I've done quite a bit of research on rays. I blanch my own shrimp haha I just prefer the raw center. That really doesn't make sense though. just feed them raw. it'll be fine. and the fish (no matter ray or otherwise) will be getting more nutirents.

I am a cook so I know a thing or 2 about what happens when you cook food. most of the nutrients are destroyed, whether its partially cooked or not! just exposing the shrimp to that heat will destroy a lot of the nutrients

I would never cook any fish food, OUR bodies are adapted to cooked food, no other animals are. including all fish obviously. your rays won't get the proper amount of vitamins and nutrients if you keep cooking the food. and yes, you can use cooked food for a short period of time without messing up the fish.

BUT in the long run they will have nutritional defficiency

Makes sense what u mention...
Do u think feeding cooked prawns and 2 or 3 types of pellet provides enough vitamins and nutrients?

I said that I don't bother with pellets unless in a gelatin based home made food. My rays don't like pellets just on their own. I am also not going to do what most people do and starve my fish till they take something that I want them to eat. When acquiring a new ray I will go thru a bunch of different foods till I find what it wants to eat...trust me you don't want to see my fridge in the garage. 100% of the time that has been raw shrimp or a different kind of shrimp.

I have fed cooked here and there in small qtys as it is not ideal. I know someone who fed 100% cooked shrimp to his high end collector sharks and eventually without any indication of a problem one died. Right away he questioned his feeding habits and changed foods. The remaining sharks noticeably all benefited from the nutritional change. I would say only feed cooked if your rays aren't eating after transport or something but get them onto other foods

I wouldn't even feed cooked. What I have found with cooked shrimp between both large and small rays is it is much more work for them to get it down. My smaller rays with cooked shrimp would sit there and chew and chew and chew and chew and chew. Raw goes down so much easier and faster. This was even with me cutting the shrimp down to really tiny sizes so it was extremely easy for them to get in their mouths.

Between cooked (horrible filler meal) and raw (better then cooked in so many ways) I will feed raw shrimp all day.

well it depends on the pellet, and why cook them? just feed them raw, if it is a price tag thing then go with raw farm raised normal prawns, idk about where you live but your regular farm raised prawn goes for like 6$ a pound around here

I Feed only hikari pellets... massivore.. cichlid gold and sturgeon pelllet.
I never personally cook my prawns or muscle.. I buy it frozen and it's already cooked.
In uk .. raw king prawn I csn get for about £5 for a half kg... (roughly 1 lb).. so its a bit more pricy.. not much though.
For me its not price thats stops me... I find my fish wjen fed raw.prawn they get hooked and start to snub other types of food..
Pellets ...should provide all the vitamins and minerals required.. and its so easy to feed.
But when I did fed raw.. the fish would go mental for it.. more than any type of other food fed.

Which pellet do u th I nk provides the most vitamins and minerals?

so if cooke3d food has nothing in it why do we bother eatting anything as i must only eat about 80% cooked food myself

my dog only eats pellets and hes doing great as dry dog food is the dog form of pellets

Cooking the food eliminates a lot of the nutritional value. As a result, you need to feed more to get them the nurishment the rays need to be healthy and active. You're throwing away money, and making the rays process more food to stay healthy.

As a good fish keeper, why would you want to do either?

Like all fish - variety is best when feeding rays. Replication of natural diet will be the best bet.
