Geophagus Surinamensis?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
no yours aren't redhead Tapajos. a lot of the eartheaters look very similar when young. yours are a type of altifron like ryan and joe said theres different kinds of altifrons but its really doesn't matter what kind they are when we are talking about the care of them since all of the care is basically the same. like ryan said they do better in groups to reduce aggression but by no means your two wont get along since they are not an aggressive fish. feed them small sinking pellets. keep the the water in the low 80s. and these fish will get around a foot.

I have 2 Balzani growing out w/ a red tail barracuda some fancy guppys and a few mollies, they don't bother anyone but each other in that tank

Mine are with some polys Im growing out. If they disturb the polys then its goodbye to them lol. Was really wanting some surinamensis. The adult specimens are spectacular

They look exactly the same as my altifrons. My altifrons were also mislabeled as surinamensis.

People are getting confused in the thread.

Honestly they look just like my Balzani.. same general fin shape and pattern, with that dot in the same position on the side.. hell I could be wrong about these being balzani though, as was already said, LFS tend to mislabel things

Gymnogeophagus balzanii are totally different than the fish pictured here. Balzani should be much more tall and stout with a blunt forehead, like these: https://www.google.com/search?q=Gymnogeophagus+balzanii

Alright so mine arent surenamensis cause they dont have the horizontal stripes on the tail. While bubbles' fish look more like surinamensis lol. Owell. Do you guys have any tips on raising these fish? Any info would be much appreciated. If theyre aggressive I might end up selling them to someone else. :( Theyre showing a slight bit of aggression towards each other. I only got two cause I was assuming theyd grow big. Ive been researching on the wrong fish the whole time haha

The fish that baseballman1321 posted with the orange heads are Geophagus sp. 'Red Head Tapajos". He was trying to illustrate for Bubbles0815 what the orange heads would look like. Bubbles's fish are most likely orange heads. A lot of Geos have a midlateral spot -- you can't use that alone to identify them in most cases. It's a combination of size/shape of the midlateral spot, the pattern in the tail, the presence or lack of an infraorbital stripe and opercular mark.

ynggru, the reason your fish are not orange heads as Bubbles suggested is because of the smaller midlateral spot and the lack of a horizontally-striped tail. Geophagus altifrons have a very tiny (and sometimes nonexistent) midlateral spot in relation to their size, and also have spots (or a combination of stripes and spots) in their tails. They also lack an infraorbital stripe and a opercular mark. True surinamensis are very similar but their midlateral spot is larger. I don't even think the pictures on Cichlid Room Companion are correct...

Your altifrons will be fairly pushy and grow large. They are probably being rough on each other now for a few reasons -- they're in a very small tank, even as juveniles (5 gallons doesn't give them much room to get away from each other), and there's not a larger group to spread the aggression among. Also, like any young cichlids, they will try to fight for dominance now that they've been placed in a new tank. Any time you bring new cichlids home they will test each other to see who's boss. This usually calms down after a few days but in a very small tank it may continue.

ill get a pic when I get home to verify but they are not gymno they are regular geo balzani that's what they were labeled as at the LFS. they don't look like gymnogeophagus balzani either, I know what those are. Mine look just like the lil guys that Bubbles has.

As I said though they could have easily been a mislabeled different geophagus, I know they aren't gymno I've compared.

I don't think there is such a thing as 'regular' geo balzani... just gymnogeophagus balzani

This thread is interesting though, I picked up some Surinamensis from my LFS the other day. I think it would be cool if they turned out to be altifrons. Not much color yet though, probably need a month or two before I know for sure.

As I said, the LFS labeled them as geophagus balzani, not gymno, I'm no eartheater expert (clearly) I was going on what my LFS told me. I attached the pic of mine to this post, looks to be the same specie as Bubbles' lil guys.

Sorry for the confusion, I know LFS isn't a great center of knowledge so I'll let the people who really know what they're talking about ID mine

Thanks for clearing things up! You dont seem to like geos much, huh. Lol! Thanks for the info, man. So mine are def altifrons now. Wow should prepare my 75 for them soon. Will they be good with a couple of 7-11" polys once theyve grown bigger? And theyre no longer in the 5gal. Should have updated. I moved them to my 20 with some 3" polys. These guys are around 2" and dont seem to bother the polys and they stick together now. I guess theyre scared? Is it normal for them to push each other away once in a while or is that already aggression? Should I keep the two or get another or keep just one to reduce aggression? And what are the growth rate for these guys. Sorry for bombarding you with questions. I've decided to raise these guys to 12" beauties!

I'm not a geo expert either, but that fish is not the same fish as post #1

Edit: they're not the same fish as bubbles pics either...

Can't see the tail but I'm guessing you got a gymnogeophagus balzani and they just were sloppy with the labeling, calling it a geophagus balzani.
