Do large catfish such as TSN and RTC and all the other large breeds out there like strong current ? I was wondering because my tank has very little current and I have a powerhead that emits a very strong current and I was wondering if I should hook it up in the tank for my RTC or will it be too strong

i noticed mine spent a lot of time infront of the strong current but also need dead spots of low to no current to rest. many large predatory fish hang in strong current to hunt prey that gets swept down river with the flow.

+1 my tsn stays swimming in the current when hunting and has a dead zone under the power head for it to rest.

Some of the more active catfish like lince cats and vultures probably enjoy it. Also I've heard some like zebras need the extra oxygen given off by a strong current

Strong current is very good because it maximizes aeration, the crucial importance of which is often overlooked and/or underestimated. As mentioned, relatively quiet spots should be present too for fish to rest in. You will see by the fish' behavior what it likes and dislikes.

I also think it gives fish a chance for some exercise and makes for an all around healthier fish.

This is a hard explination.. but both. as already pointed towards many reasons you want/need both... under current is deadly as I found out a few monthes ago now... I ended up loseing 2 Rays, a Cuban gar and a Spiney eel.. because while I had good filtration I was getting dead spots that held horrible water conditions that where effecting my fish despite my water tests coming up clean... took us weeks to figure out the problem... we thought it was disease...pollutants.. you name it we started dissecting every aspect of the set-up....not to mention dumped hundreds of dollars into "fixing" everything... we ended added a new water pump and got more circulation going.. and suddenly our water tests where off the charts... we had our answer.

imo it is better to have to tap back or run a circulation pump ect on a daily timer ect (cheap and easy) then play with having to low a flow/turn-over rate.

Thankfully catfish and gar in general are hearty fish or else I have no doubts we would have lost everything before we figured it out.

Most cats love current!!! I have crazy flow in my tank and the fish all love it especially the rays and cats.

lol in my old 500g my ray and rtcxtsn would fight to be right infront of the return of my 5000gph pump. id forget about how strong the current really was until id add feeders and they would get blown all over the tank
