Im chasing help with plumbing my tank. Any help would be great :)

Yeah I had a good read up on it last night. I really want to go bottom drilled so I might run a herbie set up but add extra safety pipe. So 3 drains in the bottom.

Ok, scrap that idea lol. Might go with the Bean overflow. Does anyone know if all 3 holes need to be in the same location, or does the full syphon drain need to be a little lower than the rest? I just dont know where to drill the holes ( on the back i know that much lol ), but how far down from the tank rim? 2''? 2.5''?. They will on one side so how far from the edge can i go to keep the strength in the tank etc?

There are so many different ways to do it! Here's my old 5' reef with an external overflow box and Bean Animal set up, the pipes exit the bottom of the box and run straight down into the stand.

I have to admit, I'm not 100% on the differences between the Herbie and Bean Animal set up, but it's the basic principal of trying having one drain running at full siphon with 95% of the flow and the other handling only the remainder that you're trying to achieve.

I drilled my holes high up the back as my tank is on a very low stand and I needed the height for the sump behind the tank. If the sump was under the tank I'd probably drill the holes vertically one above the other about 1/3 the way up from the base of the tank.

I thin kthe difference is the herbie only has 2 drains, while bean uses 3. People say 3 isnt needed but its there for security, which im pretty keen for. Im just trying to find out if all 3 drains on the back need to be drilled all level, ie all 3 in a straight line, or does the full syphon (main drain) need to be a little lower?
I really only get one shot at drilling a $600 tank, so im making sure its right lol

I run a dual Herbie on my 8 foot tank. 4 drains. Way overkill but silent and 99.999999% flood proof.

Bean's are great too. Plenty of insurance and silence either way.

Is that bottomed drilled? 2 weirs in each corner?

I think to run at a full siphon you would want one drain lower than the other if you are drilling the back/sides of the tank. Mine are only the thickness of the drain in height difference, but I have a downwards facing 90* elbow on the full-siphon one to help it keep the siphon. If you drilled the bottom you could easily make one slightly lower than the others.

Sort of. I moved them about a foot from the corners but yes, bottom drilled. It's outlined on the first few pages of the build in my sig,
