Chocolate cichlids have a lot of character, displayed in many different ways, but especially at feeding time. Many cichlid keepers liken them to Oscars in their personality. They are "push to the front of the line" fish as soon as they sense that a meal is impending. They crowd to the top, jumping for the food before it even hits the water's surface. I've had fingers nipped many a time when I delayed slightly in releasing the food item to their hungry mouths waiting impatiently below. Their ever-present upward gaze is a comical and common sight in my tanks. Here are a couple of photos of some WC 'temporalis' jockeying for position, trying to shove one another out of the way. And they never seem to get their fill. Truly like "hogs at the trough".

I love chocolates, one of the best looking, most interesting and underated cichlids around. Even tempered beauties another South American gem. Great looking fish Jim.

Thanks Tom. I agree with your comments entirely.

Nice bunch of beauties!!

Thanks Oddball.

Wonderful fish, and that first shot is absolute gold!:)

Thankyou Ben. Look like they're starting a race..."On your mark, get set, GO!

Great looking bunch, how many in the tank? What size are they now? My small pair have just started breeding, great parents, lightning fast when driving of tankmates

There are 6 in this 90G. They are about 5 - 6" TL and just over a year old. One pair has formed and they have spawned 3 or 4 times. There are 7 other fish in the tank. I agree, they are excellent parents. I've got two older pair as well. They are around 4 years old. The males are around 10" long and 5" high and are together in a 140G with several other SA cichlids. The females (~6-7") are in different tanks and are not together. I don't presently have a large enough tank to house the males and females together safely. They are real 'beasts'. Here's a pic of the older males.
