Best Fish Foods

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For my large fish (5 inches and up) I feed 3 mm nls pellets and some dried krill as a bi-weekly treat. For my grow outs (2-4 inches) I feed nls 1mm and bloodworms. For fry over half an inch I feed nls grow and bloodworms, and for fry half an inch or smaller I feed a mixture of finely ground, nls, dried krill, and pure spirulina powder. I've heard astangthin (I'm sure I misspelled that) powder is also great but I have never used it before.

Woooo that's an awesome regimen! I use separate foods for dif sizes as well! I also coat all my foods with spirulina powder too. Are you talking about that color enhancing powder, the red stuff?

I feed NLS almost exclusively( maybe feed frozen krill once or twice a month, maybe and the very occasional grasshopper or moth I catch) and I skip feeding 2-3 days a week on fish past adolescent age. I only feed 1-2 times a day except on fry tanks which get fed 3-5 times a day. Most people over feed not under feed and this is likely one of the #1 reasons we don't see more 10+ year old fish. Lots of clean water and a high quality pellet in moderation is all that's needed. Sure there are ways to make them grow faster, but if you are in it for the long haul, so what? You will achieve a larger ultimate size by ensuring it lives as long as possible. Overfeeding degrades organs and once they start to work at a rate less than 100% efficiently growth will slow and death will come much more rapidly. Hope this doesn't come across as harping on anyone because that surely wasn't the reason for this post, just sharing my view point.

My feeding program
Small fish 3" and under get
YFS cichlid craver mixed with nls growth, dusted with spirulina powder 3-4 daily
Med fish 3" to sub adult (this depends on species) get YFS carnisticks and NLS 3:1 ratio 2xdaily and krill 1xdaily
Adult fish (also species dependent) NlS and YFS carnisticks 3:1 ratio 2xdaily krill 1xdaily

Krill is also given intermittently throughout the day to my larger fish. Have had great growth and color sense switching from Hikari (as much as food can do with genetically great fish that is). I have also noticed an increase in alertness and activeness!
Who else has a diet they want to share??? Any and all are welcome, let's give hobbyist out there something to think about when choosing their fish food!

SIDE NOTE: This is just a contribution and though I do not like Hikari anymore it doesn't mean I'm cutting down anyone who uses it! I've had success with Hikari in the past but have had greater success with my current foods as much as they can give over genetics that is!

ive been feeding my 7 inch jag nls large fish formula and hikari gold with the occasional dozen feeder minnows(he eats the whole dozen.) and crickets from time to time he went from 1 inch to 7 in 6 months. i just started giving him raw shrimp chunks a few days ago and his coloration is off the charts the way i see it. i really suggest throwing in raw shrimp from time to time. (his gold is brighter in person)

12 feeders in one feeding? Is that safe, even at that size?

whoa! the first fish food thread without a fight in over 4 pages, great!
me, I have snakeheads atm and feeding is mainly hikari carni sticks and weekly once chicken and misc worms( the tank is outside in the balcony, I leave the tank lights on after dark for a few hours an assortment of flying insects fly in for the snakeheads to enjoy a buffet!), NLS is just not available or very old when found.

also for my Malawians & Tangs ( different tanks) they get a aquaculture feed sinking pellets ( very high in protein, surface skimming is a must with this food) the growth is unmatched compared to any aquarium product I have tried till now, very stinky food though!
its like feed , feed , WC , Feed , Feed ,WC . when i don't want super growth I go with maintenance foods like hikari.( just to save up on WC)

cost of it like a kilo for about 2 USD! :headbang2
