whats your take on this HIKARI product

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im not concerned about the price aslong as its not like 50 bucks for 8 ounces then that wud be rediculous .i want to feed my fish the best ingredients. the extra 3-12 dollars doesnt matter. ingredients wise what is the best out period

The answer to that question is NLS hands down. Cant and Wont disagree with the label and the facts. I just prefer the higher protein food for my growing fish which is why I use the sticks. Doesnt mean I think its better than NLS. I do though believe its a better alternative to the HIkari sticks.

The way I see it is the results the Hikari foods get (massivore, sticks, carnivore pellets) are what get people coming back to it and spending the extra money. FISH GROW ON HIKARI!!! Plain and simple and most all hobbiests like and want to see growth. What is offered in the carnivore sticks of YFS is a better replacement IMO for the Hikari foods with better ingredients (even though not the best) and much cheaper as well. Doesn't mean its the best quality food out there and comparing labels with NLS it's apparent that's true, but as a better alternative to the over hyped stuff made by Hikari with similar results it will fit the bill very well and it is competitively priced with the more affordable brands vs the stupid expensive hikari products. My main issue is price here. Why pay almost 40$ for a 17 ounce package of carnivore sticks from Hikari when you can get a similar food (still doesn't mean its the best) for 64$ for 5lbs? Or even get the shrimp sticks from YFS for 44$ for 5lbs off ebay which for the quality is a solid price and beats most IMO.

While it's makeup is not the greatest, it is my fish's favorite food bar none. I caught some on clearance once and used it up.

Fish are one of the most efficient domestic animals at converting feed, to flesh.

That is a fact.

All fish will grow at a reasonably quick rate on any decent quality food, if all other factors such as genetics, water quality, etc, are equal. Some fish are simply hard wired to grow at a much greater rate than others, and this is also widely species specific.

That is also a fact.

Last but not least, it doesn't matter how good a food is, if your fish refuse to eat it, or eat enough of it at each feeding to promote optimum growth within that species. Personally speaking I have had little difficulty training most fish to eat whatever I want them to eat, especially with regards to cichlids.

And Forrest, if your main issue is price, why not take a closer look at the aquaculture feed that Jeff linked to? I first posted that formula (along with another formula that Reed sells) over a year ago when people were looking for a less costly alternative to some of the more premium brands. Surely you could split the order with a few of your local fish buddies, or maybe even some of your DIY youtube followers? Boom! ;)

How hard would it be to split up 44 pounds of food with a few fellow MFKer's, at that price? It's even made in Japan, just like Hikari. lol

I agree, Hikari foods are ok but nls is the superior food. Why pay outrageous amounts of money for a bad quality pellet when you could buy a good quality pellet for less than a third of the price? Genetics also play a huge roll in fish's growth rate, size, color, and personality. You can put a prom dress on a pig, but it's still a pig. Same deal with fish. A high quality fish will stay a high quality fish, no matter what you feed it. It will just look a little different and grow a little diferently. Imo.

Makes me laugh that threads turn out like this. A question was asked and a few of us suggested an alternative for a better price and with better ingredients imo. Whats the harm in that? No food is perfect. No need to take shots at my youtube subscribers Lol.

Neil you claim to not care what other people feed their fish and you continue to participate in these discussions time and again. Fact.

Can we all not agree that the food in question isn't worth the money asked for it??

What, you didn't like the BOOM part? lol

I honestly thought that if $$$ was one of your main concerns then the food that Jeff linked to was potentially a much better option to Hikari Carnivore formula, vs YFS Carnivore. People piss & moan about price, but when offered a potentially very cost effective alternative they do nothing. I personally just find that strange.

And yes, I honestly don't care what other people feed their fish, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy taking part in these types of discussions. There's a difference.

Seriously, all that was trying to be done in the beginning was to recommend the YFS sticks over the hikari sticks. Then this comparison happened out of nowhere...
And Neil, if im not mistaken, you always bash on hikari for using corn starch and how its unhealthy...and then this product that Jeff promoted, contains corn starch and you are standing by it...so im confused?

We all know NLS is king, no doubt in that. But to turn a thread into this is just a waste when all that was being done was a referral over hikari sticks, and we have seen good results from YFS

"This message is 100% natural"
is just a smart Alec response...
