Not all JDs have to look the same.

And this fish is a grown looking JD. Maybe ppl are not use to seeing that.

Dispatch,

I was one of the people suggesting it looked a little off for a regular JD. There are two things that caught my eye and had me wondering. The first is the spotting on the face & chin - never seen a male JD with spotting like that. EBJD's have a broader blue wash and not the spotting like this. The second is the body seemed taller to me than JD's I am used to seeing. To me the spotting pattern and taller body suggest it could be a hybrid with a Texas. I don't agree with the suggestions of it being a BGJD - breeders of the fish continue to say you can't tell a standard JD from a BGJD by appearance. It is an absolutely gorgeous fish and to a point it doesn't matter if it is a hybrid. If you do breed it and look to sell the fry then it gets tricky on what you sell them as though.

Either way - good job raising this beast!

Regards,
Patrick

I definitely see what you are saying. I have had a male JD with similar facial markings in the past. Never have I had one with such a tall body though. I also agree with the BGJD statement. There is no way visually to tell the difference between a BGJD an a regular JD. I've bred my fair share of Dempseys to know that for a fact. He has spawned two times with his female, but it was while they were at my Mom's house and she didn't have the set up to care for new fry so they didn't make it. I'm hoping the next time they spawn I can raise some of the fry and see how they turn out. I don't plan on selling any and if I do it will be with a warning that they are possible hybrids. At the end of the day I have no idea if he is a hybrid or not and to me it doesn't really matter. I personally don't think he is a hybrid but the possibility is there.

X2- I also thought this guy is a JD hybrid because of the spangling on the face. I have NEVER seen a male JD like this and I have 25 years experience with fish. But he is gorgeous no matter what he is. Would love to own that guy. Good job and good luck.

You shared pictures of JD's that look normal and EBJD's that have tons more color, but you did not show pictures of Non-EBJD's with this much color. The body shape in the second picture (EBJD) does look taller like the OP's fish.

The other thing that I have noticed from "The Big Cichlid Hybrid Example Thread" http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...-Cichlid-Hybrid-Example-Thread-(Load-Warning) is that several of the JD hybrids look very strongly like a JD.

All of this is speculation as there are no hard facts (bought from LFS as a drop off) and at the end of the day it doesn't really matter. I also don't have any pictures of a JDxTexas that looks just like this one - it is all based on what I would expect it to look like. There is only a few pictures of adult JDxTexas hybrid floating around and most of them are of the same fish. It is all fun to speculate and I don't mean to discourage anyone, I am just sharing my opinion based on my 25 yrs of fish keeping. I would not consider myself an expert on JD's from a practical experience perspective although I have kept them for many years and all of the color forms. I do spend lots of time trying to learn more about this fish and have developed friendships with experienced breeders with whom I enjoy discussing the many color forms and genetics.

Also as you said there can be a great deal of variation with the "standard" type fish. Last I knew the splitters had taken the wild populations of JD and split them into 3 different species. So who knows!?!

It might be a jd texas hybrid bred with a jd, it has the markings of a texas but looks alot more jd than texas imo.

it's all messed up now. These days a JD is no longer a JD but it's something else that's not there. Sad...

the pics I posted are only a few out of million JDs. If you dont get it then idc
