Came in the mail couple weeks back and is doing great 3.5 inches in a 65 gallon. I was wondering if anyone had any tank mate suggestions? I know sunfish aren't good but I have thought about crappie and flier but it would be hard to obtain one small enough and catfish like bullhead but most native catfish get too big seeing as how the pickerel stays at the top most of the time a bottom dweller would be nice

There's not lot of suitable tankmates for pickerels. But flier sunfish makes a good tankmate and you can always have madtoms which stays smaller than bullheads.

Been thinking I might throw a small horny head chub from my back yard in a quarantine tank for a bit till I know its safe to put in the big tank. For the most part though my past chubs have been surprisingly aggressive, I'll be trying to find one that's a bit more relaxed. Found a site that sells blue head chubs thinking about buying a male. I can catch black crappie juveniles but its very difficult and have to wait till a couple weeks after spawn and i would have to wait a year or order one online. Does anyone know of an online vendor that sells black crappie or bream around 3-4 inches?

They are fine with pretty much anything - and that's speaking from experience. (Keep in mind that in nature, they occur with a vast variety of fish.)

Go out with a net, and you will find bream (which are sunfish) in 10 minutes or less :)

Toss a few sculpin in with him ^_^

And I've had some tankmates got eaten by the pickerel and I've had some super aggressive tankmates killed the pickerel....and that's speaking from experience :)
