Personally id even pull him out and dab a little rubbing alcohol on the wound to help slow it and definitely lower temp.

"Ducklips" is one way that Columnaris can show itself. Melafix, Metronidazole, are not the way to go. This is an internal bacterial problem (gram-negative) and needs immediate treatment to have any hope of saving the fish (if it is 'ducklips'). If not, death can occur in a few days. Lower the water temperature to 72-75F, keep the water clean and well aerated and do not feed. Ironically, Columnaris thrives under aerobic (ie oxygen rich) conditions but your FH will suffer more stress if you do not oxygenate well. The benefits outweigh the negatives. Use a combination of kanamycin sulfate (as in Kanaplex) and a combination of Nitrofurazone and Furazolidone (as in Furan-2). The kanaplex is effective against gram-negative bacteria (Flexibacter Columnaris) and the Furan-2 acts on secondary infections, both gram+ and -. Here is an excerpt from the 'net about the affliction that your FH most likely has.
"On the mouth the lesions may look moldy or cottony, and the mouth will eventually become eaten away. The fins will erode and have a frayed appearance as the infection progresses. Gills are affected too. As the bacteria invade them the filaments will disintegrate, resulting in the onset of rapid breathing or gasping in the fish due to lack of oxygen. Less commonly, the infection can take an internal course which often displays no external symptoms."
Be patient. It takes time for the effects of the medication to become apparent. I have had to wait a couple of weeks for improvement to be noticed, and up to a couple of months for the fish to be back to normal (or as close to normal as it can get, depending on the degree of physical damage) Once the fish is 'on the mend', start feeding sparingly and keep the water well filtered. Remember , avoid heat. Good luck.
^^^" Metronidazole will work. I have cured two fish with it with proper dosage and the temp set at 75. I used 250mg tablets and dosed accordingly. It does work for duck lips. Cleared up in about 5-6 days fully."
Riftraft is another one that has success with Metro because it will work with in a week. I was new to flowerhorns and mine had a real bad case of it. I was on vacation and the person just kept over feeding him.so I don't know when the ducklips started. You can see that Riftraft's fish healed within a week and mine completely healed in 8 days. Here's my post about my cure for ducklips. The only thing I did different from the instructions was that I added 1 1/2 times what was in the directions by accident but hey, it worked and I cured him in a 10 gallon tank because I didn't have another tank. Use Metro, it is one of the best medications you can use and that's why shops that deal with Hybrids always have Metro in stock. If it takes weeks to months to heal, it is either not ducklips, not the correct medication or some other health problem. I think that if I treated my fish per your instructions, it would have been dead from so much medication and stress. Also, google ducklips and most will say that Metro was the only med that helped. Not trying to argue, just another opinion, Ed.

i have used clout, and aq salt, with the temp lowered to 75..cleared up in 3 days....get treating that fish fast..it looks like early stage and medicine will help..but if no meds..it will get worse real fast and spead into the head....and it will look like tumor growth between the eyes and white puss will come out of the the fishes face...and when that happens....its all over.... get a handle on t fast!! Ducklips is a B$%tch!!! and is a real killer!!
