I'm thinking about starting a RBPs tank again, when's the best time to buy them and when theirs more of them around at lps. I'm guessing the best time is when their breeding but what do I know, help me out! Thanks!

I don't no about the LPs , but aquascapeonline has small rbp all the time:)

They don't have any 1inch, so I wouldn't say all the time. I look online befor I make posts.

Well they normally spawn during the rainy season which is around may. But obviously in aquaria the rainy season is simulated by cold water changes, once you have a breeding pair they go at it like hamsters! Usually rbp are always around where I live but as for a special time to get them it doesn't really matter.

Aquascape has a good deal on some caribes but their 2" so idk but their still Rad IMO!

Whats your setup look like?

well once my tig and armatus out grow my 125, ill have it open. I haven't really been in the mood to get anything new really and I'm happy with what I have now so I was going to take advantage of it and fill it with reds again. I've always missed my old group I had and I would love to get them to the point were I could get them to breed. The tanks got 3x 110g filters with 2 jets and undergravel filters so its perfict for them.

Thanks! Any good sites to look up breeding info for them? And I will!

This one has good info.

Basically they usually hit sexual maturity after the 1st year, at that point colder wc help stimulate them and the colder rainy season, then hopefully 2 of them will pair off and establish their own territory which they will defend. The male usually digs a nest in foliage. That's why a lot of times before and after spawning they fin nip the **** out of each other because of that territorial aggression. As long as water is good and diet is plentiful they will go at it eventually.

ok thanks!

there's really no "good time" for rbp as they are probably the most readily available piranha on the market, if your tank is ready and you see some on sale and price is right for you, you go get them.
If you are wanting to get wild caught ones then usually around early summer time as that matches up to their breeding season in the amazon, like around May, June.

I'm not sure if there's any rbp breeders in the US but one importer mentioned to me that majority comes from breeder in Asia, unfortunately with the limited entry port(s) available for piranha now it maybe more difficult to bring them in from overseas now so they may not be as readily available as they used to be.
If there are breeders in the states that is supplying the market then the there shouldn't be any problems.
