What do you guys feed your cichlids??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is no defense in feeding raw ingredients such as corn, soybeans, and/or protein and fat derived from poultry sources, to fish... except that it is FAR cheaper than using high quality marine based ingredients.

...My fish don't do corn, whole soybeans, or poultry processing plant waste.
+1. Don't want to see corn or the vast majority of soybean products, especially soybean meal and even more so whole soybeans, or poultry products (including feather meal, etc.) in fish food. I won't use products with these ingredients. Reasons include but are not limited to fish health.

I use NLS There A+ in various sizes. I also use Omega One Super Veggie Pellets my Chocolate cichlids love it and much to my suprize my wild cought Altum Angels go nuts for it. All my fish get NLS as the staple and the ones that like it the veggie pellets a couple of times a week.

I think Omega One is a good quality food I have used the Omega one marine pellets which containe a good amount of garlic. I never heard of Southern Delite before.

Your going to wake the beast! RD and I have a bad history but one thing he knows is Fish Food Nutrition! Trust me when I say that if Southern Delight was beneficial to the fish community he would be the first to put that out there but its not so enough said....!

LOL anything that doesn't have an NLS label is garbage to him, but it doesn't so enough said about that. NLS has basically the same ingredients in every bottle with deferent labels on them. I use YFS foods now and the ingredients in that for are comparable to NLS but not to him because its not labeled with NLS! Sorry guy, he knows his stuff for sure but is definitely bias towards NLS! I used NLS for a while and can say sense I made the switch to YFS I've seen awesome improvements well over what NLS did for my fish.

Not to mention the OP asked what people feed there fish and why, he didn't ask for people dogging others opinion because they think everyone in the hobby should use the food they swear by! Lets get back on topic, no one cares to hear all the cut downs and smashing against others opinions and what they feed there fish! All it's going to do is ruin another great thread that could have been useful to a lot of people! You have your favorite that you think is the best just like everyone else. Come on people!!!

So its unfair to talk about the makeup of certain foods? And why folks may or may not choose those foods?

Longterm health is often not defined by the here and now. Lotsa additives can boost color in ornamental fish, but what are the longterm effects?

Personally, I find the actual ingredient list of a fish food pretty important and open for discussion. Lotsa folks pick apart NLS and Hikari too.

JwHiser ........... I have fed most all brands of tropical fish foods over the years, and to this day still experiment with a number of commercial tropical foods. You don't know me, or anything about me, including what I have fed, and/or currently feed to any of my fish. I suggest in the future that you keep any/all personal comments about me to yourself, or bring some friends & pack a lunch. You'll be in for a long day. lol

I happen to promote and contribute to a LOT of things in this hobby, besides just feeding quality food. You might want to look up some of those past discussions, many of them have been made stickies. :)

With regards to this discussion, I will continue to stand by my previous comments, and those who feel that their fish can gain something that in their minds is nutritionally lacking in other premium brands, by feeding raw ingredients such as corn, soybeans, and poultry by-products, by all means feel free to do so. No one here is forcing you to do otherwise, or for that matter to even read any of these comments.

Never said any of that read the post again, I was stating there is not a reason to be obtrusive and simply dog another's use of any given food;)

Agreed.

But I question the data and ingredient list on any food someone claims to be good. The " my fish look great" isn't quite enough for me personally. Not dogging your feed, just trying to see what's in it. It's something new that I was unaware of till it was mentioned here.

I do the same for my families personal diets and my dogs as well.
