Update and unfortunate turn of events

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not necessary before marriage but definetely before kids :D I almost gave up when i got second daughter but it is every year easier as they are growing up :)

Keep a goal (monster tank) in mind and save save save - always think twice before buying things you dont need and sooner or later tank will be yours (reminds me how i was saving for my tattoo...took me two years) - meanwhile read a lot and learn from others mistakes - it will be much cheaper in the end :)

Yeah definitely, the way I figure, my parents want to move house soon so maybe my monster upgrade will be bigger!

Yeah, I firmly believe that if you out the hard work Into it, there's no reason to not get where you want.

Good stuff man, sensible decision. I would never have picked you as being so young from our interactions on here, maybe it's the complete sentences and punctuation?
;)

IMO, a big tank at that age isn't really a great idea anhyway, you've got your whole life ahead of you. I've set up and sold numerous "big" tanks before now, and to me this (at age 32, in my second house, somewhere I want to live for a long time) feels like the first time I'll really be able to keep it for any great length of time and enjoy it. You can have a heck of a lot of fun and keep a whole lot of really interesting fish in "smaller" tanks that don't need the floors reinforced, and don't double your electricity bill, and don't take up half you house/garage, etc etc.

I seem to recall you being into plecs and bottom dwellers? If I were in your situation I'd look at getting a glass tank made around 4-5' long, 2-2.5' wide, and maybe only 16-18" tall, chuck a couple of good canister filters on it, and you'll have a good footprint to play with without too much weight or water. Big DIY are awesome, but there's a time and a place. It sounds like you have some serious (and interesting) studies coming up, and it could involve some sort of travel/field trips (guessing?). Save the massive tanks for when you're settled in a good job and living somewhere you plan to spend a good portion of your life.

What subject are you studying?

Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Specifically, I want to work in the field of 'rewilding'; the restoration of historical ecosystems around the world from before the end-Pleistocene extinction event that was cause by a perfect storm of conditions of human hunting, celestial impacts and climate change. The concept of rewilding is really gaining steam and I hope to contribute in such a way that my son can take HIS boy on safari in the American southwest to see the return of the American lions. Granted, they wouldn't actually be Panthera atrox, but it would be a lion in America. I could go on for hours about this but this isn't my thread so I won't lol.

Actions make the man, not age. You sound like a young man who is a credit to his parents and to his country.

Well said, and very true!

Thanks, I take that as a compliment haha.
As for waiting till I'm more settled and financially stable before getting a monster tank, I see where your coming from and I guess I'll have to wait and see when the time comes in which I have the opportunity to purchase the tank.
Yeah, the course I want to take has a lot of trips abroad so money is a factor there also.

I've heard about that concept and I thought it was brilliant. I can see you doing that lol! How far along your college course are you?

I'm a sophomore after six years of going to school. I'm three credits from starting my junior 'year'. Things go significantly slower when you can't focus all your attention on school lol. I'm hoping to use my MGI bill to smash my last two years of my BS. I'm pretty sure that my disability will be significant enough to let me get the better, four year VA GI bill instead that I'd use to try to get a MS. My time in the army has destroyed my knees, my left ankle, my back, my neck, my left elbow, and I have three TBI's among other things that I don't care to talk about. I suspect that I'll qualify for the VA bill, but it'll be about a year and a half before I know. The VA moves sloooow.

I'll be moving into my core classes soon. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm going to be going to the University of North Florida for my core classes, they have an amazing school of science. I took most of my general classes online. I've enjoyed the journey so far. I can't wait to finally finish it! LOL

You certainly should take it as a compliment! You seem far more clued up than the average teenager (hell most 20-somethings too!).

And if you've got the option, take the travel. I really wish I'd got out and explored a bit more when I was younger. I'm still able to do it now but it's far more costly and difficult when you've got a mortgage, dogs [no kids yet, phew!], tanks etc to take care of. Enjoy being young and free while you can, don't give up on the hobby (of course) but if I could do it again I'd certainly pick travel/adventure over big tanks in my youth.
