Yeah, it always seems to be a guessing game with young Vieja/Paraneetroplus. I'll just be patient and wait as I don't feel like netting and venting them.

I think the Mollies will continue to work well as I have no piscivorous cichlids in my community. However, something like your P. loisellie would most likely not work very well with them.

Good to hear about the A. robertsoni. "He" seems to be settling in well minus the intial interest the others had with him when first introducing him.

Yes my loisellie would be too much for any livebarer. I am worried about how he will be when larger with the astyanax even when they are 6''. He chases them now, but they do something very interesting. They follow him and he turns to chase, but can't catch them.
How is the robertsoni with the firemouth? This is with your 135g right? Or is it a different tank?

Hah, tricky little guys!

The robertsoni is in my 135 community however I no longer have the meeki. I traded the pair in a while ago to make some room for some of the newer additions. I can almost guarantee my female meeki would NOT have been pleased though. She was quite the terror. The male was much more relaxed and actually took a beating quite regularly from her. I just posted an updated video of my community a few posts down; check it out.

Yeah livebares and parachromis don't mix well.

The robertsoni should be fine, but watch the aggression with each other. Are you hoping to get a pair?

I still only have the lone male. I dropped in my LFS today and they still have several left including a couple females but I'm not sure I want a pair as my I'm already pushing the limits stock wise. My C. sajica and C. chets will be pairing up soon enough and I'm sure they'll give me enough problems as it is.

Also, I was talking back and forth with notho2000 and he noted that I may have the same "strain" as he does, which is thought by some to be a completely different species..


notho2000: "My strain of 'robertsoni' is from Honduras (Rio Jutiapa) and there is some controversy as to whether they are 'robertsoni' or another species altogether ('margaritifer'??) They don't get anywhere as large as the the regular 'robertsoni' (5-6" as opposed to 8")) and have much more pink/red coloration as opposed to predominently blues (hence the common name Turquoise cichlid). The females of the 'Jutiapa' form have a dark black patch on the front of the dorsal fin, like some of the Thorichthys species. I have not kept the more common (Mexican) 'robertsoni' but I've read that the males have more blue spangling on the flanks and longer points on the dorsal and anal fins."

I've seen pics of his and my mine does look very similar to his. The females at the LFS have the black blotch on their dorsal as he described as well..

I have seen the Rio Jutiapa and they do have a lot more red. They are very beautiful. Who knows they might be a different sp., but I believe they are still robertsoni, but they are in an isolated location, so they evolved a little differently. DNA testing could solve that. The body shape is very similar but the mouth seems wider than the Rio Jutiapa. I measured mine out of water and she is 10". I don't think she will get any bigger.

Also, what does yours eat? Mine has been very picky thus far. He hadn't ate anything since I got him a week ago until today. I picked up some live blackworms and he went nuts over them..

Thanks. She was 2'' when I bought her in 2008 at a LFS. I wish I knew where she originated from. She is almost the same size as my male syn and longer than my male JD. I am very curious about the size of the Rio Jutiapa too. I didn't think mine would get this large, because everything you read says 8'' max TL.
I'm surprised yours are picky eaters. Mine is a greedy eater. She eats mostly hakkari sinking pellets, but also eats blood worms and the occasional small algae wafer. I believe the diet should be meaty based, and should be similar to most thorichthys sp. found in the same locations. I think they mostly eat invertebrates found in the substrate and that is why yours love the blackworms. My a. rostratus on the other hand likes more veggie based foods.
