Ideal duration of time for lights to be on?

I have a 20gal tank with mostly tetras and a plecostomus. I leave the light on for about 10 hours a day. I have been told that it should be longer, so what would be a good time to leave it on? Thanks

Does it have plants?
If you leave the lights too much it will just stress out your fish, also leave a good break out for algae...

Since this isn't under planted tanks I'd say you mean just fish? As long as your not getting algae 10-12 hours is fine for viewing pleasure. Unfortunately with planted tanks are viewing time is limited due to the devil aka algae!

There are a lot to learn regarding the hobby... search around stickies here and you will learn!
Btw, too much light will encourage algae to bloom in your tank, it's those hair like things that's within the water... it's not really harmful for the fish, but somewhat unsightly to aesthetic view. But having a pleco within your tank I think it's more beneficial to keep it that rate. (depends on the owner really)
