I may start having a docu for this, tho I found it resembling a miniature self sustaining man made pond...
You have to plant really heavy for this to work. And I agree with the one post about fish size and waste. I personally wouldn’t try discus in it. Too risky for me.
Now would you use a substrate for the planted tank or go use a top soil and cap? I'm currently trying this in my 55 and using top soil. After this tank is done I will never use top soil again. The water kept that light brown color which really hides the color of the fish and I do not recommend it. I recently added a double red apistogramma agassizi and I'm extremely ticked because I can’t enjoy his colors.
^ maybe its finally time to invest in a cheap digital camera...

-nitrate hungry plants,
-decomposers/scavenger shrimps, yes, amano/red cherry shrimp, non plant eating snails will play a big part here for breaking down things.
-right set up
-knowledge about what bacteria has to bloom
-a lot of science. lol
