What is the grossest thing you've done in the aquarium hobby!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In the 70s, I had a pair of ornates that would not spawn. So I read up on influencing spawns and decided to try injecting each poly with 1.0cc of PMSG. I found a farm that had what I needed. I followed a horse around, while carrying a bucket, until she had to pee. When she started, I had to hurry to her without spooking her, and get the bucket underneath her to catch the sample I needed. The elbow gloves and vet's apron did nothing to keep me dry. Then, of course, I had to get the bucket back to school without upsetting it too much in the back of my car.
See, PMSG is 'Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin'. I needed it to stimulate the ornates to spawn. It's what had to be done before the commercially-available Ovi-Prim.
:-) Did the ornates spawn for you?

It's not a natural nest-based spawn when using hormones. The pair began releasing eggs and milt all over the tank within an hour of being injected in the caudal base. The eggs were siphoned out and hatched out in multiple tumblers. I was able to raise about 100 fry to saleable size. A bonus was an 'A' on my advanced biology project in my senior year of high school. I made about $1000 in direct sales to keepers, sales to a few lfs, and club auctions at NJAS. Pretty good money for 1975.

I flushed a questionable sized dead pleco down the toilet. Doesn't seem to gross right? The next day I am sitting on said toilet and I have to perform a "courtesy flush" if you know what I mean. So I'm sitting there and wondering why is my ass gettiing wet?!!! I jump up only to have sewage dump out on the floor. Wait, wait, it gets better. So I try valiantly to plunge but to no avail. So I try to snake it, nope, this is an old toilet and I can't get the dam snake to make the corner. I decide I have to pull the toilet off. I pull the toilet but it is still plugged!! I reach up underneath and pulled out a stiff dead pleco covered in toilet paper and my feces at which point the toilet is no longer plugged and empties the rest of the raw sewage on the floor.

This story probably wins!

Nice thread had a some good laughs, myself being in my 30's some of the things I've done at some point but doesn't seem gross to me. Mind you I've two boys and changed many a diaper so go figure.

As pretty much all my family lives on the west coast (BC) I do know at one point in life growing up my cousins and I had a fish guts fight. Me being the youngest and smallest, I lost big time. Mom said I stunk to high heaven we were all chased back into the ocean to clean off. My cousins made me eat all sorts of things on those fishing trips. But in time you tend to forget.

Fish tank wise ... I slept with a dead goldfish for almost a week. My very first tank, when the last goldfish dissappeared from my tank .... we found him in my sheets when we were changing my bedding. I was 8 or 9 yrs old.

Now one thing I haven't done (knock on wood) so far in aquaria ... taken in a mouthful of tank water. I grew up on a farm and have had to empty a number of fuel tanks .... after that taste, you learn different tricks

Brings a new meaning to sleeping with the fishes lol:ROFL:

I'm amazed that you pulled that off as a HS senior, and yes that was a good amount of money back then.
I did not know that hormone injections bring such speedy results!
