this is my first planted tank and I don't know if there are any special concerns due to that. pointing the holes up or down, etc..

So my tank is a 110g four foot by 2 foot footprint tank.
I am having problems with my flow, even after adding 2 powerheads. Plus the tank looks cluttered.

This is what I have now.

It's on a metal stand, so I can move things if need be.
I want to fashion a long return spray bar to go across the back of the tank
maybe keep intakes in the corners and return across the top? Like this:

My first concern is that I have 2 canister filters. One is my fluval 406 that has my in-line heater attached to it.

The second canister is a Eheim 2229, this is an odd canister because it is a wet dry canister. It's cycles through periods on flow and no flow, as it fills and empties. It IS NOT a traditional canister filter.

My first idea was to attach the output of both canisters to the same spraybar, one at each end.

But then I started wondering if the back flow from the fluval would mess with the eheim hooked to the other end of the spray bar during it's trickle phase.

So, my choices are proceed with the original design attaching one to each end, or make 2 spray bars and either connect them in the middle just for looks like this pic I found:

or would I have better flow if I made 2 four foot spray bars and had them both across the back of the tank, one pointing upward and the other down, or both up?

or I could tuck the intakes behind the spray bar and have them more towards the middle and not so much in the corners.

What do you think?

oh and I bought 1/2 inch pvc because I figured it would match the 5/8" eheim green tubbing I use on both of my filters better but all the plans I see online use 3/4 " plumbing, do you think 3/4 would be better?

I'd go with two individual spray bars. But u have to remember, with a planted tank, you just want water movement without a lot of splash. Keep the air bubbles to a minimum.

Half and half is a good idea. That way u can tell if one slows and needs to b cleaned

Make a T connection in the middle of the spray bar so both canisters are flowing with each other not against. Maybe put a Y connection off if the that has smaller fittings going into bigger. So you can connect the hoses straight to the spray bar. Also go with small holes maybe a 1/4" or less. The smaller the better it will give you the movement but will create less air bubbles.

If I hooked both canisters into a Y fitting would that stop back flow from one canister to the other?

No there shouldn't be as long as there's enough holes in the spray bar. The Y fitting will make the water be pushed as one unit not two.

Not without a check valve on both return lines... As previously advised I would not hook the two together. I run a fx5 with pvc piping. I would put sponges on your pickups and a spray bar for the return. One in front and one in back. Piping tucked up high right at the waterline is barely noticeable. I would also pipe it in tank with sch 80 pvc not sch 40 saves on painting it black because it comes dark gray already.

I was looking at the grey pvc at lowes tonight and they didnt have the reduction things I need to hook up the tube and the elbos were really large compared to the white stuff. I think I need to stick with the 1/2 inch to fit my tubbing. They did have black poly pipes that said potable, but it look not as straight, i think its for irrigation
